Helix captures Silver Championship at Sweetwater event

NATIONAL CITY – The Helix High girls volleyball team battled their way to a division championship at the Sweetwater Prime Sports Invitational last week.

Helix went 2-1 in pool play on Friday with 2-0 wins over Kearny and Castle Park before losing in two to San Marcos.

The Highlanders qualified for the Silver division on Saturday where they swept three matches to win the Silver Championship, including the title match win over Classical Academy.

Helix swept all six games it played on Saturday, including a 25-19, 25-1 romp over San Diego in a morning contest. Helix also swept past High Tech San Diego.

Also on Friday, Granite Hills dropped a three-game sweep to Otay Ranch, 25-23, 25-17, 25-22.

Meanwhile, on Thursday, host Steele Canyon knocked off Christian in five, 28-26, 19-25, 26-24, 16-25, 6-15.

Katelynn Caserma-Kloebe, a senior, had 17 kills for the Cougars, while Tyler Sinkovich, also a senior, added 12 kills.

Sophomore Julie May had four kills for Steele Canyon, while junior Ashley Whipple led with seven blocks.

Junior Gabi Gandolfo had 28 digs for SC, while sophomore Chloe Gould had 35 assists.
