Hawks drop just one match at Day 1 of USTA/ITA Regional

LA MIRADA (THU, SEP. 24, 2015) – The San Diego Christian men’s and women’s tennis teams competed in Day 1 of the 2015 United States Tennis Association/Intercollegiate Tennis Association Western Regional NAIA Championship on Thursday hosted by Biola.

 

The Hawks dropped just one match of the 11 played on Thursday.

Men’s Singles – Round of 32:

Newcomer Michael Rjazanov made quick work of Hope International’s Andres Rivas in the Round of 32 6-0, 6-0. He will take on Biola’s Joe Turnquist in the Round of 16.

Daniel Superlano defeated Biola’s Michael Vartuli 6-0, 6-2. His next opponent will be Santiago Galeffi from ACU.

Fourth-overall seed, Alessandro Moriano knocked off Arizona Christian’s Michael Munguia 6-4, 6-0. Moriano will play Maruicio Mosquera from Hope International in the Round of 16.

Jan-Erik Isermann also defeated a GSAC opponent as he won 6-3, 6-3 over Biola’s Luke Mountain. He will play Tyler Cawthorne of Arizona Christian.

Men’s Doubles – Round of 16:

Moriano/Superlano defeated Hope Internationals Rivas/Maiolo 8-1. The pair will go up against No. 2 overall Galeffi/Moore from ACU.

Isermann/Joey Rivera defeated Castano/Froelich of ACU 8-4 and will play No. 1 overall Travis Kimsey/Carl Lindqvist of Westmont.

Women’s Singles – Round of 32:

Heather Borsos defeated Rafaella Zak Zak of Arizona Christian 6-3, 3-6, 10-8. Borsos will play No. 4 overall Kathryn Ashford of Biola in the next round.

Nataliya Yamkova defeated Hope International’s Sabrina Miller 6-4, 6-1 and will play against Tia Okano of ACU.

Brooke Ferslov-Jensen beat Gabriella Chavez of Hope International in straight sets 6-0, 6-0. She will play Susan Carmichael of Biola in the Round of 16.

Women’s Doubles – Round of 16:

Borsos/Ferslov-Jensen defeated Okano/Zak Zak of Arizona Christian 8-5 and will play against No. 2 overall Isabel Lee/Lauren Stratman of Westmont College.

Miriam Boeta/Yamkova lost to Madeline Heer/Susan Carmichael 8-4 and are eliminated from the tournament.

Round 2 will start at 8 a.m. for singles and 2 p.m. for doubles on Friday.
