CYPRESS (12-5-15) — The Grossmont College women’s basketball team opened the 32nd Annual Lady Charger Classic with a 62-52 loss to Santa Monica at Cypress College.
The game got off to a very slow start as neither team had a good shooting quarter. Grossmont (1-5) went 4-of-16 from the field, while the Corsairs (2-5) went 2-of-15. The first quarter led to some bad shooting numbers for the game as the Griffins shot 36-percent, while Santa Monica was just 39-percent.
JAZMINE BRADLEY (Monte Vista) led all scorers with her 18 points, including going 2-for-2 from deep. Bradley and RANAE HANNIBAL (San Diego Christian) were the co-leaders as they both had seven rebounds in the contest.
The second quarter was the turning point of the entire contest as Santa Monica figured out the Griffin defense as they outscored the Griffins 23-8 to gain a 30-16 lead at intermission.
The Griffins came out of halftime with a renewed energy as they held their own in the third quarter, before outscoring Santa Monica in the fourth quarter. But it was not enough as they fell in the opening round.
In the consolation semi-final Saturday (Dec. 5), the Griffins will face Orange Coast College at 1 p.m.
