Griffins bid ta ta to Tartars in coming away with second win

IRVINE (12-12-15) — The Grossmont College women’s basketball team outscored the Tartars of El Camino-Compton in all but one quarter en route to winning 60-43 on Friday (Dec. 11) in the consolation semi-finals at the Irvine Valley College tournament.

 

Three Griffins (2-7) reached double figures in the scoring column led by DOMINIQUE MORRISON (Santana) who had a 15 point, 10 rebound double-double.  JAZMINE BRADLEY (Monte Vista) turned in 11 points and CHRISTINA BARRAMEDA (Ramona) 10 points also reached the teens in scoring.

 

The Griffins shot in the 40 percentile from the field and hit 13 free throws in the contest.  Defensively, El Camino-Compton (0-10) had another hard night shooting as they only made 14 of their 40 shots from the field and were forced to commit 33 turnovers (17 steals).

 

The first quarter was the Griffins weakest quarter of the night.  They went on a scoreless drought of six minutes, but they left the quarter tied with El Camino-Compton at 11-all.

 

In the second quarter, the Green and Gold held the Tartars to only nine points.  Bradley scored six of her points in the second stanza.  Half of the 16 points in the quarter came from the free throw line.

 

Both teams came out of halftime hot.  Both teams had their best quarter in the third.  Grossmont extended their halftime lead by another six points to lead by 11 points three-quarters through the game.

 

Grossmont closed out the Tartars by outscoring the team from Los Angeles by a 13-9 margin.  Morrison scored seven of her 15 in the final quarter, hitting half of the team’s field goals in the fourth.

 

Later today the Griffins will play El Camino (the main campus) in the consolation championship at Noon.
