IRVINE (12-13-15) — Under the new rules that the NCAA and CCCAA have adopted for women’s basketball, if you score 20 points in any quarter it usually leads to a victory.
Friday (Dec. 12) saw the Grossmont Griffins (2-8) score 20 in the third quarter as they defeated El Camino-Compton. Yesterday against the parent campus, El Camino (7-3), it was the Warriors that scored 20 (in the first quarter) as they went on to a 60-50 victory to capture the consolation championship at the Irvine Valley College tournament.
JAZMINE BRADLEY (Monte Vista) scored a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds for the Griffins as they continue their tough start to the 2015-16 season. Also reaching double figures in scoring, and having a game-high 14 points was CHRISTINA BARRAMEDA (Ramona). Rounding out the trio of Griffins with double digits was JOANNA DELA CRUZ (El Cajon Valley) with 10 points.
Bradley was the only Griffin to have 10-plus rebounds in the contest that saw El Camino miss 42 shots from the field. Neither team had a rebound advantage as both teams wrangled 46 caroms. Where the Griffins did have an advantage was on the defensive end as they grabbed 30 ricochets (compared to El Camino’s 27).
The Griffins owned the paint as they outscored the Warriors 24-18, and the Griffin bench outscored the Los Angeles school 20-12. The problem was that the Griffins were sloppy with 23 turnovers.
Grossmont will now take 16 days off to take finals and prepare to host the 28th Annual Grossmont College Holiday Tournament. The eight-team, double elimination tournament will be held at the Griffin Arena December 28-30. Cypress, Citrus, Bakersfield, Barstow, Victor Valley, Cuesta and Santa Ana will join the Griffins over the three day event.
