SAN DIEGO (1-28-16) — At the end of the third quarter, Grossmont College was looking to move above .500 in PCAC action and into striking distance of San Diego Mesa for third place.  The problem was that the Griffins couldn’t slow down San Diego City’s Samera Henry out of Lincoln High.  The six-foot freshmen hauled in 22 rebounds, 13 of which were in the second half, as she led the Knights to a 55-44 victory at Harry West Gymnasium on the campus of City College on Wednesday (Jan. 27).

The Griffins (6-14, 3-4 PCAC) fought tough through three quarters as they were only down a point heading into the final quarter.  Then the Knights (6-14, 3-4 PCAC) nearly doubled Grossmont’s output 19-10.

JUSTINE GARDE (Granite Hills) led all Griffins with 14 points and was the only scorer in double-figures.

The stat that really doomed the Griffins attempt at moving into the upper half of the conference standings was that they were whistled for 15 fouls that led to 21 free throw attempts (13 made) for the Knights.  Grossmont went 9-of-17 from the charity stripe.

Henry’s 22 rebounds were only two fewer than all five Griffin starters in the contest.

Grossmont will try to go 2-1 on the week on Friday (Jan. 29) when they travel out to Imperial Valley for a 5:00 p.m. tip-off.  Earlier this week, the Griffins defeated Imperial Valley at home in a makeup game from earlier this season.
