El Cap’s Adams scores 20 in birthday win

The El Capitan girls basketball team following their third win of the season on Monday night.

LAKESIDE (12-6-16) — It was a double-day plus one for 6-foot freshman STEPHANIE ADAMS who scored 20 points, grabbed 13 rebounds, snagged 6 steals and celebrated her 15th birthday as El Capitan rolled past Sweetwater 62-21 on Monday (Dec. 5) in a Mustang Tournament game.

The Vaqueros barged into a 35-9 halftime lead and the game turned into a rout. They also started off with a 12-0 run and led 27-4 at one point in the second quarter.

GRACE BURKETT chipped in with 12 points, 9 rebounds and 5 steals.

The Vaqueros collected 8 steals in the victory.

EL CAPITAN: Stephanie Adams 20 (13 reb, 4 ast, 2 blk, 6 stl), Grace Burkett 12 (9 reb, 5 stl), Marie Cook 10 (5 reb, 4 ast, 1 blk, 3 stl), Jordan Grandy 9 (1 reb, 3 ast, 5 stl), McKenzi Kygar 4 (3 stl), Danielle Pimentel 6 (2 reb, 2 ast, 3 stl), Devon Bullock 1 (2 reb, 1 ast, 2 stl).

STEELE CANYON 34, SD-SOUTHWEST 15 – Steele Canyon broke into the win column by dunking San Diego Southwest in Monday’s (Dec. 5) non-league encounter.

MARIANNA MARTINEZ knocked down 8 points to lead the Cougars.

“We were missing easy baskets,” said Steele Canyon coach PETER RUIZ. “We should have won by double of what we did.”

Steele Canyon: Marianna Martinez 8, Tayanna Mason 6, Makayla McCarthy 4, Elizabeth Bott 3, Nina Taft 3, Lala Wadley 2, Laezhane Mason 2, Khylaya Brandy 2, Kortni Fahie 2.

GROSSMONT 51, PATRICK HENRY 46 – The defending Grossmont Valley League champion Foothillers opened the season with a victory over Patrick Henry Monday night (Dec. 5).

CANDACE HENDERSON hammered in 18 points and grabbed 2 steals to lead the Foothillers in a Mustang Tournament game.

ATHENA SOTELO poured in 15 markers, hauled down 5 rebounds and made 4 steals.

Six Foothillers contributed to the scoring.

Next up for Grossmont is a contest at Christian High on Thursday (Dec. 8) at 5:30.

Grossmont:  Candace Henderson 18 (2 stl), Athena Sotelo 15 (5 reb, 4 stl), Sabrina Yohannes 6 (3 reb), Noelle Luzader 6 (2 stl), Emily Barnes 3 (6 reb, 1 blk).
