SANTEE (12-13-16) — A group of 40 boys and girls and staff members from down under recently flew to the USA as part of the bi-annual Australian Box Hill Senior Secondary College USA Basketball Tour.
On Monday night (Dec. 12), they played the West Hills Wolf Pack boys and sent them packing to the tune of 65-58.
“We played 11 guys tonight but only four scored,” said Wolf Pack assistant coach TIM BARRY, whose son CAMERON BARRY led the Pack with 26 points including 5 treys.
NATHAN BALL pitched in 19 points, the majority coming on a trio of 3s.
“They were huge,” said Coach Barry. “One guy was 6-foot-9 and another was 6-6. One of their players, last name Aheel, also scored 26 points, including burying 6 threes – and they were deep threes.”
According to Barry, Ben Simmons played at BHSSC a couple of years ago. He was the No. 1 draft pick in the NBA and was Player of the Year at Louisiana State University.
These tours compliment the BHSSC Basketball program by providing an amazing opportunity to combine basketball, travel and once-in-a-lifetime experiences for students. It is particularly valuable for those students who are interested in attaining an athletic scholarship to a USA College as it provides an opportunity to perform before College scouts who attend some games.
The 2016 USA Tour will see the group visiting Houston, Dallas, Los Angeles and San Diego, playing basketball games against a number of USA high school teams, sightseeing as well as attending NBA games such as the recent San Antonio Spurs vs. the Dallas Mavericks game.
West Hills: Cameron Barry 26 (3 reb, 1 ast, 2 stl), Nathan Ball 19 (7 reb, 2 ast, 1 stl), Marquell Cool 9 (1 reb, 1 ast, 2 stl), Chris Moyer 4 (4 reb, 1 ast), Jovan Bea (1 reb, 1 stl), Scott Bettoney (2 reb), Matthew MacDonald (1 reb), Brandon Peterson (1 ast).
GIRLS
BOX HILL (Australia) 75, WEST HILLS 37 – The West Hills girls basketball team also faced the Aussies and struggled before falling 75-37 to the visitors.
VIVIAN PANELA punched in 11 points to pace the pack. No one else reached double digits.
“Box Hill Academy is really good but we didn’t play well,” said West Hills girls coach RYAN KINSER. “We didn’t match their toughness and physicality.
“It was a good test and eye opener heading into the upcoming Tarkanian Classic in Vegas. Hopefully, our girls understand now what it takes to play high-level varsity basketball.”
West Hills: Vivian Panela 11, Carly Raley 9, Jessica Fondas-Ryan 6, Kerrie Daniels 4, Maya Clemons 3, Haley Doucette 2.
