ROUNDUP: Braves’ Watson goes over 1k career points

The El Cajon Valley Braves served meals and donated clothing at a homeless function at Wells Park then took in the Holiday Bowl on Tuesday night.

CHULA VISTA (12-29-16) — MARINA SMITH and CAMRYN OWENS shared the lead with 12 points apiece for Helix, as they downed Otay Ranch Wednesday (Dec. 28) in the Aztec Holiday Classic, 55-43.

TALIAH HOOKER popped in 10 points, and DANIELLE SIMMONS was big on the boards with 16 caroms. MARIYAH HOWARD corralled 8 rebounds as well.

Helix will take a breather until Friday (Dec. 30) when they meet a TBA opponent in the Aztec Holiday Classic at Montgomery.

EL CAJON VALLEY 41, PREUSS 15 – El Cajon Valley punched out Preuss as LEANNA WATKINS set a milestone scoring mark with 18 points in the Bonita Optimist Tournament, giving her a total of 1,016 in the junior’s career.

SUMAYA HAMEED led the supporting cast with 13 points and 9 rebounds.

LILLIAN AKINTENDE also grabbed 12 boards, dished 5 assists and made 8 steals.

“Not bad for a junior,” said Braves coach CARLOS MOSS. “She only played in the first half. She needed a break.”

The Braves will take on Chula Vista on Thursday (Dec. 29) at 2:30 at Bonita Vista in the Bonita Optimist Tournament.

CULVER CITY 46, WEST HILLS 33 – West Hills could not generate enough offense to keep pace with Culver City in the SoCal Holiday Prep Classic NCAA (Black) Division contest on Wednesday (Dec. 28).

“We just got out played,” said West Hills coach RYAN KINSER. “Their girls made plays and ours didn’t. We had a lot of good looks, both inside and out but we didn’t make anything.”

CARLY RALEY was the only member of the Wolf Pack to score in double figures with 11.

OLP 52, GROSSMONT 32 – The Foothillers suffered a stunning 52-32 loss to Our Lady of Peace in Wednesday’s (Dec. 28) Bonita Optimist Tournament.

CANDACE HENDERSON paced the Foothillers with 14 points, while TYANA WARSAW grabbed 9 rebounds and blocked 3 shots.

MIRA COSTA 55, MOUNT MIGUEL 45 – The Matadors made a last ditch run at trying to upend Manhattan Mira Costa in Wednesday’s (Dec. 28) SoCal Holiday Prep Classic WNBA Division game.

The Matadors will play Rainier Beach of Seattle in Thursday’s (Dec. 29) at 6:30 at Mount Miguel.

“They play a style that might help us bolster our scoring,” said Matadors coach ROBBIE SANDOVAL.

SATERA BATES dropped in 17 points and CAMARA DOUGLAS added 16 points and grabbed 14 rebounds for Mount Miguel.

Douglas sat out the whole second quarter in foul trouble, so all of her points came in the second half.

RANCHO BUENA VISTA 58, EL CAPITAN 35 – STEPHANIE ADAMS rolled a triple-double of 10 points, 10 rebounds and 14 blocks to pace El Capitan in Wednesday’s (Dec. 28) SoCal Holiday Prep Classic NAIA Division.

MARIE COOK followed with 16 points and 9 rebounds for the Vaqueros, but RBV prevailed despite El Capitan’s best efforts.

“RBV had a girl (Buckley) pretty much go off in the fourth quarter,” said Vaqueros assistant coach ROCKY COOK. “She hit 26 points total – 15 in the fourth quarter.”

El Capitan will face Mt. Carmel at 6:30 on Thursday (Dec. 29) at El Capitan.
