BONITA (12-31-16) — No matter how you stack it the Mount Miguel Matadors always seem to earn the favorites’ role.

This year will be no exception. Matadors coach ROBBIE SANDOVAL has posted a 585-70 record since 2000, but this year will be no picnic because the competition will be a little bit stiffer than in the past.

The Matadors rolled over Greak Oak in the final round of the SoCal Holiday Prep Classic WNBA Division by clipping the Temecula Wolfpack 44-35.

The victory might have been a lot easier for the Matadors had they not scored only 2 points in the third quarter.

CAMARA DOUGLAS led the charge for Mount Miguel with 24 points, 14 rebounds and 2 blocked shots.

Mount Miguel:  Camara Douglas 24 (14 reb, 2 blk), Satera Bates 9 (3 reb, 3 stl), Laila Smith 8 (7 reb, 3 stl), Deyonna McBride 3, Michelle Corley 2 (1 reb, 1 stl), Tiaja Bennett (4 reb, 3 stl).

GROSSMONT 51, KEARNY 20 – Grossmont upended Kearny in Friday’s (Dec. 30) Bonita Optimist Tournament, more than doubling the score on the Komets.

TYANA WARSAW paced the Foothillers with a double-double of 21 points and 10 rebounds, while CANDACE HENDERSON pitched in with 17 points.

ATHENA SOTELO dished 8 assists to go with 5 rebounds and 4 steals.

Grossmont:  Tyana Warsaw 21 (10 reb, 2 ast, 2 blk), Candace Henderson 17 (4 reb, 2 stl), Athena Sotelo 5 ( 5 reb, 8 ast, 4 stl), Sabrina Yohannes 6 (4 reb, 1 stl), Jazmine Lee 2 (3 reb).

EL CAJON VALLEY 32, THE MONARCH SCHOOL 24 – El Cajon Valley led 12-7 at halftime of Friday’s (Dec. 30) Bonita Optimist Tournament and never trailed.

The closest The Monarch School would come to edging the Braves was in the fourth quarter when each team scored 8 points.

The Braves held the advantage, however, and came away with the victory.

LEANNA WATSON led El Cajon Valley with 19 points, 9 rebounds and 8 steals, while SUMAYA HAMEED dominated the boards with 12 caroms to go with 8 points.

VEAN GORGEES grabbed 8 rebounds and made 2 steals plus scored 4 points for the Braves.

El Cajon Valley:  Leanna Watson 19 (9 reb, 8 stl), Sumaya Hameed 8 (12 reb), Vean Gorgees 4 (8 reb, 2 stl), Lillian Akintende (4 reb, 4 ast, 1 stl), Rania Noori (5 reb, 2 stl), Erica Bazile 1 (5 reb), Keariel Brewer (2 reb).

CALEXICO 44, HELIX 39 (OT) – In a stunning defeat, Helix stumbled to an overtime loss against Calexico in Friday’s (Dec. 30) Aztec Holiday Classic at Montgomery.

The Highlanders’ only point in OT was registered by DANIELLE SIMMONS, leaving only disappointment for Helix (9-5).

Simmons paced the Highlanders with a double-double of 10 points and 19 rebounds.

Helix:  Danielle Simmons 10 (19 reb, 1 ast, 1 blk, 1 stl), Camryn Owens 7 (5 reb, 2 ast, 2 blk), Olivia Missouria 7 (2 reb, 1 stl), Diamond Whitley 4 (6 reb, 2 ast), Janae White 3 (8 reb, 1 ast), Taliah Hooker 3 (4 reb, 1 ast, 1 blk, 1 stl), Mariyah Howard 2 (2 reb), Melat Ezana 2 (1 reb), Marina Smith 1 (1 reb, 1 ast), Kaliah King (3 reb).

LAGUNA HILLS 45, EL CAPITAN 17 – The Vaqueros’ offense sputtered in Friday’s SoCal Holiday Prep Classic NAIA Division Championship game. Due to some scheduling conflicts, El Capitan was supposed to play 6-5 Canyon Crest but wound up facing 9-5 Laguna Hills.

It made a difference.

STEPHANIE ADAMS could not break the double-digit barrier, settling for 10 rebounds and 6 blocks to go with her 8 points to lead the Vaqueros.

“For some reason, we were very flat today,” said Vaqueros assistant coach ROCKY COOK. “I think we were just out of gas. But we’ve played in three championship games in a row, and that’s something.

“As soon as we get our two injured players back (GRACE BURKETT and McKENZI KYGAR) we’ll be in much better shape.”

El Capitan:  Stephanie Adams 8 (10 reb, 6 blk), Marie Cook 8 (6 reb, 1 blk, 1 stl), Devon Bullock 1 (1 stl).
