SAN DIEGO – NAIA sixth-ranked Menlo College took advantage of seven walks and three hit batters by San Diego Christian starter MARK YOUNG to open a weekend set with a 10-5 win over the Hawks in a Golden State Athletic Conference game played at Point Loma Nazarene University on Friday afternoon.
In the Menlo third, Joe Gillette hit a 3-run home run to right center.
Menlo broke open the game in the top of the sixth, scoring 7 runs off of Young and his replacement, Jerry Quesada.
Jordan Getzelman powered a grand slam to left field to clear the bases. Eduardo Sanchez added a solo shot to increase the score to 10-0.
The Oaks’ Jason Alexander (5-0) held the Hawks off stride with just one infield hit over six innings.
In the bottom of the seventh, Steven Pico doubled to left center and Vahn Bozoian found the right field line for another double and the first Hawk run.
A Caeden Barnes single was followed by an Austin Yeoman single to score Bozoian, bringing the score to 10-2.
Justin Hawkins continued the rally with a double down the left field line, scoring Barnes and sending Yeoman to third. Two RBI groundouts by Brooks Fages and Tyler Wilson brought in the final runs of the inning and closed the gap to 5 runs.
The Hawks record fell to 5-12 (4-9 GSAC), while Menlo improved to 18-3 (7-1 GSAC).
