EL CAJON (5-5-17) — The Christian High Patriots were swinging the bats on Thursday (May 4) as they bowled over the visiting La Jolla Vikings in a Western League contest, 20-6.
“Our line score sounds like a telephone number,” joked Christian coach MIKE MITCHELL.
Thirteen different players got hits and the Patriots slammed three home runs in the 4th inning alone. Christian finished with 20 runs, 20 hits and 18 RBI.
In the first inning following one out, ZACH HOGUEISSON walked, GARRETT NIELSEN and JUSTIN LEDGERWOOD both singled to load the bases. A wild pitch scored Hogueisson and ETHAN CONTRERAS had a base hit to score Nielsen. JAKOB BECK slashed a double to score Ledgerwood, and ALONZO RICHARDSON hit a sacrifice fly to score Contreras.
Nielsen slugged a 2-run homer – his 4th – in the 2nd inning then in the 4th he homered again with a man aboard to bring his total round-trippers to 5. He finished 3-for-4 with 3 runs scored and 5 RBI.
In the 3rd inning the Patriots sent 10 batters to the plate and scored 4 runs on 4 hits and 3 walks.
Christian plated three 2-run home runs in the 4th. JESSE MATTHEWS hit his first homer with one on, and Contreras followed with a home run of his own.
“That was Matthews’ and Contreras’ first ever home run,” said Mitchell. “They had never hit a home run, even in practice.”
Contreras finished 2-for-4 with 2 runs scored and 3 RBI, and Beck was 4-for-5 with 2 runs scored and an RBI.
“We weren’t real pleased with the way we swung the bats last Tuesday (in the first game vs. La Jolla), but we were much more focused today,” noted Mitchell.
