COSTA MESA – The Grossmont College Griffins will take on Orange Coast College at Dick Tucker Field on Saturday at 1 p.m. in a National Southern League game.

The defending state champion Fullerton Hornets beat up on Grossmont last Saturday, 78-9, in the conference opener for both teams.

Grossmont fell to 2-4 overall.

Despite their 2-4 overall record, the Pirates received attention at the bottom of the JC Athletic Bureau poll this week.

Orange Coast College opened up National Southern League play with a 28-20 win over visiting Palomar College on Saturday night at Dick Tucker Field.

Orange Coast College rolled past the host Griffins, 35-19, last season at Mashin-Roth Stadium.

MYLIK STEEN had four receptions for 72 yards to lead Grossmont last week against Fullerton.

NELS HALTOM, of the Griffins, kicked a field goal in the first quarter, making a three-pointer for the fifth-consecutive game and his seventh of the season.

Grossmont’s  SEAN WHITE had 10 tackles, while LOGAN BAKER had eight stops in the game against FC, while freshman LANE SELF had three pass breakups for Grossmont.

The Pirates (2-4, 1-0) went out to a 28-6 lead late into the third quarter before a pair of TDs by the Comets (4-2, 0-1).

The OCC defense held the Comets to just five yards of rushing offense, thanks to four sacks.

OCC quarterback Pete Mitchell was 14-of-23 for 182 yards with one TD, while running back Nick Jackson had 105 rushing yards and a TD on 16 carries.

OCC wide receiver James Rutledge caught seven passes for 135 yards in one of the top weekend performances in the state.

Rutledge caught four passes for 97 yards and a TD in the win at Grossmont last season.
