SPRING VALLEY (12-27- 2017) – The Mount Miguel Matadors definitely came to play and defend their home turf against the visiting Southwest Eagles on Thursday.

The Mount Miguel Matadors finished off the Eagles, 83-54, in a Montgomery Aztec Holiday Classic game.

Five Matadors scored in double figures led by MARQUISE EDWARDS, who scored 17.

Mount Miguel started stacking up points with 1:23 left in the 1st quarter, as they already led the Eagles, 25-14.

MARQUIS NEAL hit a beautiful 3-pointer towards the end of the 1st.

The only issue, contagious with both squads, was that the foul bug was relentless.

This was a very physical contest, to say the least.

Mount Miguel played lights out defense and were fantastic on the boards, especially with the offensive rebounds.

There were, however, several a few spectacular steals, as well.

The Matadors were up 27-15 at the half, but the score didn’t indicate how well the Matadors were playing, minus the fouls.

Southwest had a 4-point run with 5:20 left in the 3rd quarter, as they were only down 34-19.

However, the Eagles hopes would be swept away as the quickness, speed, and the overall athleticism the Matadors have was just too much for the Eagles from Southwest to overcome.

The Matadors scored 20 points in the 3rd, the most dominant quarter, but it seemed to be Mount Miguel’s most dominant quarter, as the Matadors led 70-39 to conclude the 3rd quarter.

Neal, who finished with 15 points, hit another 3-point swish with 3 minutes left in regulation and C.J. JACKSON added quite a few rebounds and a couple of buckets towards the end of the 4th.

Thus, still with plenty of whistles, the contest moving rather quickly.

DERON TRAYLOR added 16 points for the Matadors

Mount Miguel (11-1) has a 5-game winning streak and will be taking on a team not yet announced at press time at 8 p.m. Thursday night in the continuation of the Aztec Holiday Classic Tournament at Mount Miguel.

Southwest (2-4) will play at Point Loma (4-7) on Thursday at noon.
