Hillers advance to tourney final, withdraw

CHULA VISTA – The Grossmont Foothillers defeated the Bonita Vista Barons, 57-59, on Saturday afternoon and appeared to be headed to the championship game of the annual Chula Vista Spartan Classic basketball tournament.

But the Foothillers, who improved to 8-7 overall, decided to withdraw from the event not to participate in the title game, and the Barons went on to play Lincoln in the final.

Lincoln defeated the Barons, 44-41, to sweep to the tournament championship.

It was reported that Grossmont coach FRANK FOGGIANO did not want his players to play two games in one day.

Grossmont led Bonita Vista 41-31 after the third quarter of the semifinal.

The Barons mounted a charge and pulled to with 49-43 with 2:16 left as Bonita Vista went on an 8-2 run.

However, sophomore forward JAMIE ODOM had a critical basket to push Grossmont’s lead back to eight. He finished with a game-high 21 points.

The Foothillers led 51-47 with 1:11 remaining and then added a couple of timely buckets in the final minute.

AUSTIN ODOM and Jamie Odom combined for six-straight points as Grossmont led 57-47 with 25.6 left.

 

OTAY RANCH 98, STEELE CANYON 84 – Otay Ranch outran the Cougars in a Spartan Classic consolation despite GRANT CHILDS bringing home 25 points for Steele.

The Cougars suffered their third-straight defeat.

Otay’s Chris Stanek finished with 37 points, while teammate Tarik Deadmon finished with 27 points and 13 rebounds. Grant Childs scored 25 points for Steele Canyon.

Otay Ranch led 81-62 with 5:17 left in the 4th.

Otay Ranch was up 46-38 at the break and were up as much as 15, before the Mustangs let the lead slip to 3 at 38-35, before finishing the half on an 8-3 run.

Otay Ranch led 23-14 after 1.

The Cougars open up league play at West Hills on Jan. 12 at 7.

CHRISTIAN 71, ISSAQUAH (Wash.) 64 – The Patriots won after trailing early.

Christian trailed 17-13 at the end of the first period, then it was a one-point game at halftime.

The Patriots started to assume a bit of control, gaining a six-point lead late in the third quarter.

MONTE VISTA 58, CALEXICO 36 – DEONDRE MCHAYLE had 25 points to lead Monte Vista over Calexico.

DEMARCUS MCKAN added 11 points for the Monarchs.

CERRITOS 73, HELIX 49 – The Highlanders had a rough outing at the Mt. Carmel Holiday Hoops Classic.

Helix’s KAI JESSIE looked sharp for the second-straight outing, tabulating 10 points.

Helix fell to 9-6, while the Dons improved to 10-4.

CLAIREMONT 54, MOUNTAIN EMPIRE 47 – The Red Hawks fell to 2-8 and will face Borrego Springs in a road game on Jan. 5 at 6 p.m.

IMPERIAL 54, LIBERTY CHARTER 48 – Senior GABE GRIMM had 17 points, but the Lions fell to Imperial in a tournament contest.

Junior JAVIEN LANKFORD added 12 points for Liberty, which fell to 3-5.
