ESCONDIDO – The El Capitan girls basketball team found out what it might be like playing in a San Diego CIF playoff game when it went on the road to face the top team in the section’s Division 3 – Escondido Adventist Academy – on Wednesday evening.
And given the results, the Lady Vaqueros might have come away with a bit of confidence despite a 49-40 defeat at the hands of the 17th-ranked Hawks.
El Cap knew it had scheduled a pretty tough game against Escondido Adventist, the section champ last year in Division 4, but the Vaqueros has played the second-toughest schedule in the division to-date.
Both teams are in Division 3 this season and the Vaqueros, despite a 9-12 overall record, are currently battling for a possible opening home game in the section playoffs thanks in part to that strength of schedule.
A scenario like the one tonight could easily happen in the second round of the postseason.
The Lady Vaqueros had to bounce back from a sluggish start against the Hawks, which saw them trail 12-5 after one quarter. EAA built a 30-18 lead at halftime.
El Capitan made a modest run in the second half.
Sophomore guard JORDAN GRANDY led El Capitan with 13 points, including six points in the third quarter, while freshman forward KYLIE MEAD contributed 11 points and five rebounds.
Grandy also had four steals, four assists, three rebounds and a pair of blocks.
Freshman center SERENE WECKBACK added eight points and six rebounds and was a force defensively with six blocked shots.
El Cap was just 8-of-15 from the free-throw line
