Sultans win to take over Valley lead

SANTEE (2-8-18) – In a crucial league game, the Santana Sultans were able to turn the heat up on the Monte Vista Monarchs in the second half to claim a 2-0 victory.

Coming into the contest the Sultans were tied for first place in the Valley League with the Helix Highlanders while the Monarchs who came into the contest in fourth place looked to make some noise by knocking off the Sultans.

The entire first half between the two teams went back and forth with each team having various opportunities to score but just couldn’t take advantage of those said opportunities.

With both team’s offenses being squelched by the defense the first half ended at 0-0.

However, in the second half, the Sultans finally were able to break through when Ashley Madrigal cranked one into the back of the net to make it 1-0.

The momentum for the Sultans would continue a couple minutes later as Miranda Frank was able to find the back of the net to extend the lead 2-0 and pretty much seal the victory.

Santana with the two-goal lead went to work on the defensive end of the field as they were able to squelch any type of opportunities the Monarchs might have had at gaining any type of momentum.

With the Sultans defense stepping up to the task they were able to preserve the shutout and claim the victory.

With the victory, the Sultans were able to claim first place as the Helix Highlanders in their contest against the third place El Capitan Vaqueros mustered a 2-2 draw.

The Monarchs with the loss are now 10-6-1 overall and 3-5-0 overall in league play.

Santana with the win has now won 2 games in a row and moves to 9-6-4 overall on the season an 6-0-2 overall in league play.

With the win and the Highlanders tying the Sultans are now in first place by a game with two games left to play in the season.
