ESCONDIDO – The El Capitan Vaqueros looked like anything but underdogs against the host Tri-City Christian Eagles in the San Diego CIF Division III quarterfinals on Saturday night.

The Eagles earned the home game by way of their No. 3 seed, but sixth-seeded El Capitan left town with a ticket to the semifinals by way of an overwhelming 52-24 win.

The Vaqueros (17-12) will face the Christian Patriots (20-9) in an all-East County matchup in the semifinals at Ryan Athletic Center.

El Capitan freshman MACKENZIE CURTIS scored 14 points, including 12 in the first half, as the Vaqueros built a 31-13 lead by intermission.

Vaquero sophomore JORDAN GRANDY added 13 points, including three three-pointers in the first half. She knocked down two treys in the first quarter as El Cap led 19-9 after one.

The Vaqueros defense was strong early, but was even better in the second quarter, allowing the Eagles just two field goals in the second.

“SHI PEREZ and VIRGINIA MARTIN held their leading scorer to just seven points (for the game),” El Capitan head coach DARIN CURTIS said.

El Cap freshman KYLIE MEAD stepped up in the third quarter and scored six points. She finished with nine points overall.

Sophomore point guard DEVON BULLOCK ran the show for the Lady Vaqueros.

“Devon had her best game of the season,” Curtis said. “She really took over the game and made everybody look good. It was nice to see everybody get in the game.”

Now two teams that are different, yet, very similar will meet for a berth in the San Diego CIF Division III championship game.

“They definitely have a good team,” Curtis said. “It should be a good game.”

The Vaqueros are no stranger to this spot. El Capitan has won section division semifinal games before under coach Curtis over a decade ago and the Vaqueros won a section division title just three seasons ago led by CIERRA CUTLER.
