SPRING VALLEY – The No. 2-ranked Mount Miguel Matadors defeated the Westview Wolverines, 45-35, in a San Diego CIF Open Division quarterfinal game on Saturday night at the Matadome.
Mount Miguel freshman guard SYLENA PETERSON scored 14 points, including eight in the first half.

Matador senior forward CAM DOUGLAS scored eight of her 13 points in the second half, and was a big force blocking the Wolverines’ shot attempts.
The game appeared to be a runaway early, as Mount Miguel scored the first 15 points of the game and led 20-3 late in the first quarter.
The second-seeded Matadors would lead 20-6 after the first quarter.
Westview, seeded seventh, trailed 27-15 at halftime.
Douglas scored the first bucket of the game, then moments later, senior MICHELLE CORLEY recorded a steal and threw to Peterson underneath for an assist and the Matadors were off to a fast start.
Junior LALLI GURROLA and TIAJA BENNETT both hit a three-pointer in the first quarter.
Peterson then added a three to make it 18-5.
The Wolverines stuck with the game plan and were able to eventually able to break the Matadors’ press better after a little repetition.
Mount Miguel, winners of six-straight games, will host sixth-seeded La Costa Canyon in the San Diego CIF Open Division semifinals.
The Matadors are looking to return to the finals for the first time in three seasons.
