Patriots beat Barons in top-ten contest

SPRING VALLEY – The fifth-ranked Christian Patriots used a frantic finish to finish off the eighth-ranked Bonita Vista Barons, 63-57, at the Matador Classic on Monday night in a matchup of two of the county’s top teams.

After trailing 29-23 at halftime, the Pats pulled to with 35-30 at the end of the third quarter.

Patriot junior SIMONE JAMES scored six points early in the the fourth, then AMAYA HOWARD knocked down here second three-pointer of the second half to give Christian the lead, 51-50, around midway though the final stanza.

ALLIE CARREON added a three-pointer which extended Christian’s lead to 58-53 with under two minutes to play.

YESINIA SMITH added eight points late for CHS.

FOOTHILLS CHRISTIAN 56, HOOVER 13 – Junior ELLIE TURK scored 29 points, including four three-pointers, to lead the Knights.

Sophomore ARANTXA FONSECA added 12 points for FCHS, while freshman NATALY BRAVO added 11.

Turk and Fonseca combined for six blocks and 15 of the Knights’ 25 steals and Foothills improved to 4-0.

 

CARLSBAD 58, STEELE CANYON 16 – The Cougars, under new coach BRIAN AFOA, dropped the opener to the Lancers on the road.

 

Saturday

EL CAPITAN 61, OUR LADY OF PEACE 40 – The Vaqueros rained down threes against the Pilots, connecting for 13 shots from beyond the arc.

Sophomore MACKENZIE CURTIS had 25 points, 14 rebounds 10 steals and eight rebounds for the Vaqueros.

Sophomore SHIANA PERES added 12 points and junior JORDAN GRANDY added 11 points.

Both Curtis and Peres canned four treys, while Grandy added three triples and seven assists.

 

FOOTHILLS CHRISTIAN 69, CLAIREMONT 27 – The Knights won behind 50 points from the combo of ELLIE TURK (30 points) and ARANTXA FONSECA (20 points).

Freshman NATALY BRAVO added 11 points for the Knights.

Turk added nine rebounds, nine steals and eight assists. Fonseca also grabbed nine boards and added three blocked shots.


WEST HILLS 35, GRANITE HILLS 8 –
The Wolf Pack won the early 9 a.m. game against the Eagles, now led by coach BRIANA MARTINEZ.

ETIWANDA 64, CHRISTIAN 43 –
The host Eagles outscored the Patriots 20-5 in the second quarter to erase a 13-10 deficit after one quarter.The Patriots got three three-pointers in the first half.KRISTEN WILLIAMS had a pair of three pointers through three quarters, but Christian trailed by 25 heading into the fourth.

CANYON CREST 57, SANTANA 18 – Santana lost Canyon Crest, but the Sultans got seven points from junior BRIANNA JERIG, six points from junior LAKAILA AGUININGOC-DAVID and five points from freshman BELLA TERRY.

Senior AALIYAH STONE and Terry both had a team-high five rebounds for the Sultans.

Friday

MONTE VISTA 50, CASTLE PARK 49 – The Monarchs trailed 8-7 at the end of one, but outscored the Trojans, 20-10 in the second quarter and then held on for the win late.

Monte Vista hosts Crawford on Wednesday.

OCEANSIDE 40, VALHALLA 32 – at Oceanside, the Lady Norsemen trailed just 9-8 after one quarter and 21-16 at halftime, but dropped the season opener.

After being outscored, 13-2, in the third quarter, Valhalla rallied for a 19-6 comeback in the fourth.

Valhalla will face Maranatha Christian at the Tri-City Christian Varsity Girls Basketball Invitational.
