SAN DIEGO – Foothills Christian sophomore DERRIEN CARTER-HOLLINGER made a couple of big shots down the stretch to help the second-ranked Knights rally past Harvard-Westlake, 71-63, at the Torrey Pines Holiday Classic on Wednesday.
The Knights’ trailed most of the way but got a big spark late on a four-point play from Carter-Hollinger with just over a minute left to play, which made the score 67-61,
Minutes earlier, Carter-Hollinger had a three-pointer to tie the game at 53-all.
Carter-Hollinger’s older brother, D.J., had a basket-and-foul conversion which gave FCHS a 56-53 lead, although the Wolverines came right back to take the lead a couple of possessions later.
The Knights’ led 63-61 with two minutes to play in the contest.
Harvard-Westlake led 40-32 at halftime after a fast start which saw them lead the Knights 26-17 after the first quarter.
Junior YASSINE GHARRAM and D.J. Carter-Hollinger both had 22 points for the Knights.
Senior JAREN NAFARRETE added 14 points for Foothills Christian, which spotted the Wolverines a 13-0 lead to start the game.
Nafarrete made three free throws with 1:50 left in the third quarter to cut the Harvard-Westlake lead to five points.
HELIX 65, SAN PASQUAL 46 – The Highlanders defeated the Golden Eagles in a game played at Serra High as a part of the SoCal Holiday Prep Classic.
Junior MAURICE HOLMES led the Highlanders with 19 points, while KAI JESSIE added 14 points.
Helix led 13-10 after one quarter and increased the lead to 32-17 by halftime.
Holmes had 13 points in the first half.
SAMMY STEWART had 10 points in the first half for Helix.
MOUNT MIGUEL 65, CASTLE PARK 18 – The Matadors won in an Aztec Holiday Classic game against the visiting Trojans.
MARQUISE EDWARDS led the Matadors with 17 points, while newcomer LAWRENCE GRAY brought a big boost to the Mount Miguel lineup with 15 points.
CHRIS JONES chipped in with 10 points.
Mount Miguel improved to 9-3 overall.
FAIRMONT PREP 67, CHRISTIAN 64 (OT) – At the MaxPreps Tournament, the Patriots led 46-41 at the end of three quarters.
The score was tied 58-all at the end of regulation.
Christian High led 25-21 at halftime after leading 10-6 after one quarter.
Christian fell to 6-4.
EL CAJON VALLEY 65, HORIZON PREP 21 – The Braves won at the Braves Winter Tournament to improve to 7-5.
LIBERTY CHARTER 57, CLASSICAL ACADEMY 47 – The Lions won their Braves Winter Tournament contest over Classical Academy.
HIGH TECH NORTH COUNTY 66, EL CAPITAN 59 – The Vaqueros dropped their contest on Wednesday.
MISSION HILLS 50, GROSSMONT 37 – Three Foothillers finished in double figures, as MYKOL RODRIGUEZ had 11 points, while LACHIN BEKIROV and NOAH
Grossmont fell to 9-4.
SERRA 56, MONTE VISTA 41 – The Monarchs fell to 6-7 as the Conquistadors won the opener at the SoCal Holiday Prep Classic.
Serra later won a second game of the day to start the boys’ division of the tournament 2-0.
