SANTEE – Two storylines emerged from Grossmont’s 39-38 squeaker of a win over host West Hills in a key Grossmont Hills League matchup on Friday night.
Storyline No. 1 is that the Grossmont Foothillers will be hosting the GHL’s Game of the Season next Friday night at 5:30 p.m. against perennial champion Mount Miguel.
The Foothillers have survived injuries, illnesses and their opponents’ best shot to arrive at the lofty goal.
They did so again against the Wolf Pack, who emerged as storyline No. 2 with an awesome effort to almost derail the Hillers’ hopes.
The Wolf Pack nearly came back from a 27-16 halftime deficit. West Hills has just three wins this season, but this may have been the team’s performance of the season.
Junior SARAH HENRY had three three-pointers to lead Grossmont with nine points.
Junior AMELIA ELLIOTT had a pair of three-pointers in the first half for the Foothillers.
Grossmont’s problem was at the free throw line. The Hillers went 0-for-11.
“We can’t discredit West Hills,” Grossmont head coach GRACE CAMPBELL said. “They hit some key three-point shots.”
West Hills was coming back strong in the fourth quarter behind three-pointers from junior PAIGE EVANS and senior HALEY DOUCETTE.
Evans finished with four threes on the night.
“We all played very well,” Evans said. “It was our best game that we’ve played all season.
“We played well as a team and it was a bummer that we lost by one point.”
