East County Sports staff report

KEARNY MESA (3-10-2019)  – In the battle for the Pacific Coast Athletic Conference pennant, Grossmont College first took a season-opening series from preseason favorite Palomar.

Now San Diego Mesa took a three-game series from Grossmont. And now the Olympians are on top of the league standings and the Griffins (2-4) are already four games out of first place.

The Olympians took the first team head-to-head matchups with the Griffins after Kobby Lopez and two relievers fired a 4-hit shutout in a 12-0 pasting in game one of a doubleheader on Saturday.

The Olympians (11-6-1 overall, 6-0 PCAC) claimed game two, a makeup from a rainout on Thursday, 6-2.

Lopez, a freshman left-hander out of Imperial High, struck out five Griffins over his 8 innings of work. Another reliever walked two to open the 9th inning, but freshman Casey Nimmo of Temecula entered to retire the next three batters.

Third baseman Cyrus Fullen (St. Augustine) led Mesa by batting 3-for-4 with a double from the leadoff spot. He also walked, scored twice and had an RBI.

Three other Olympians – second baseman Kevin Van Linge (Poway), designated hitter Joel Escalante (Castle Park), left fielder Raymundo Gutierrez (El Camino) and left fielder Raymundo Gutierrez and shortstop Victor Ceniceros (San Diego HS) – also registered three hits each to spark an 18-hit attack
