Griffins complete sweep with Tolhurst, Hazelhurst

PALM DESERT – The Grossmont College Griffins completed a three-game sweep of the College of the Desert Roadrunners on Friday to stay within reasonable distance of first place with one-third of the PCAC complete.

The third game was the toughest for Grossmont, as the Griffs took an 8-6 decision in the three game series here.

Grossmont won the opener here, 14-6, on Tuesday, then won its only home game of the three-game set this week, 6-1, on Thursday.

Former Santana Sultans Anders Tolhurst pitching seven innings, striking out nine to pick up the home win.

Former Granite Hills Eagle Josh Verdon had two RBI in that one and former Grossmont Foothiller Jayden Lombardo had three hits, including a solo home run.

On Friday, Grossmont trailed 5-0 before scoring five times in the seventh to tie the game.

After COD re-took the lead in the bottom of the inning, the Griffins got a three-run home run with two out from Trevor Hazelhurst for the decisive blow.

In the series opening win here, Grossmont got two RBI from Lombardo and Verdon, who hit a two-run home run in the third.
