Renovated Henry has new finish for Monarchs

SAN CARLOS – Monte Vista senior running back Isaiah Gardner rushed for 147 yards and two touchdowns on Friday night but the Patrick Henry Patriots rallied for a 39-36 upset win over visiting Monte Vista in a non-league contest.

In the third quarter, Gardner had a touchdown run to increase the lead to 28-13.

The Pats’ Bryce Johnson, had an 8-yard run for a touchdown late in the third to bring his team to within 28-19.

Josiah Lawson had an interception by for Henry, setting up a touchdown run by Johnson for the Patriots’ second score in less than a two-minute span.

Early in the fourth, Kai Jessie, the former Helix basketball standout, had a touchdown reception to give Patrick Henry a 31-28 lead.

Gardner had a 69-yard touchdown run for the Monarchs to regain the lead, 36-31, as senior Ron Barry and junior Adrian Ortiz pushed their defender out of the way.

Jessie had a catch for the decisive touchdown late in the game.

Monte Vista had a last-minute drive, but Raymond Bernard finished off the Monarchs with an interception.

The Monarchs finished with two interceptions of their own.

Xavier Leyva scored the game’s first touchdown with a 12-yard run early in the contest for Monte Vista.

Henry’s Omar Hammond hauled in a touchdown pass in the first quarter, as well, but the Monarchs led 21-13 at halftime.

Patrick Henry quarterback Matthew Castillo passed for 346 yards and five touchdowns.

Hammond, a sophomore, and junior Luke Carillo-Batson combined for over 200 yards receiving for the Pats.
