Caver youth prevails over Vaqueros

SAN DIEGO – The El Capitan Vaqueros were able to nearly match San Diego High’s youthful stars during the first half of Friday night’s non-league contest at Balboa Stadium
The Vaqueros had an early 7-6 lead just four-and-half minutes into the game and trailed just 27-21 at halftime.
However, the Cavers got four touchdowns on the night from running back Amare Ary, the son of former Mt. Miguel star Dwayne Ary, and two touchdowns from junior back Mo Jackson in a 53-29 win over visiting El Cap. It was San Diego’s 14th-straight victory.
San Diego scored on a pair of kickoff returns in the first quarter to virtually stop any thought the Vaqueros might have at some momentum.
Ary had an 80-yard kickoff return and junior Shairohn Ramsey had a 65-yard runback.
Another Caver freshman, Curtis Rogers, hauled in a 46-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Dajon Meshack for the first score of the game just four minutes in.
The first quarter took nearly an hour and featured 41 points as San Diego led 27-14.
The Vaqueros got first-half touchdowns from senior Donny Green, a 21-yard scamper that actually gave El Cap a 7-6 lead just five minutes into the game.
Green had consecutive runs of 10 and 12 yards, which proceeded the touchdown.
Junior Kalen Lavallais, who hauled in a 25-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Wick Hauser with two minutes left in the first half.

El Capitan sophomore Antwone Yokley returned an interception 42 yards for a touchdown six-and-a-half minutes into the third quarter, bringing the Vaqueros to within 39-29.
Junior back Taylor Grasmick’s 3-yard touchdown run brought the Vaqueros to within 27-21 at intermission. Grasmick also had hooked up with Hauser on a 47-yard pass play late in the first quarter.
