RAMONA – The El Capitan Vaqueros didn’t allow a single point in the first quarter and defeated the host Ramona Bulldogs, 58-25, in a Tip-Off Classic game on Tuesday.

Mackenzie Curtis scored 21 points and Emma Driskill added 14 to lead El Capitan, which was ranked 14th in the initial county media poll, which was released on Tuesday.

The Vaqueros were the highest-ranked Grossmont Conference team in the first release of the media rankings.

Curtis came out firing with three three-pointers in the first quarter. She also had 12 rebounds in the contest and three steals.

“Emma Driskill killed it tonight in the paint,” Curtis said. “We also had our bench step up, as well. Stephanie Yeakle hit a three and Hannah Burton has some key rebounds.”

Driskill had seven rebounds.

“We came out playing really strong defense,” said Yeakle, who handed out a team-high three assists. “I think we played well as a team and worked hard for each other. When we play team defense – like we know how – we are a much better team overall.”

El Capitan’s Tiffany Bickford had six rebounds and three steals.

“Our offense is coming along very well,” Curtis said. “Rebounding tonight was a big focus for us. Freshman Kaylee Cole is getting more and more comfortable at point guard.”

FOOTHILLS CHRISTIAN 61, LA JOLLA 13 – The Foothills Christian Knights were ranked 22nd in the initial county media poll, which was released on Tuesday. That might be an underestimation.

Senior Ellie Turk scored 20 points, grabbed six rebounds, handed out nine assists and had three blocks for the Knights, which put on running clock on the Vikings in the second half.

Foothills Chrisitan improved to 3-0.

“Our defense really stepped up today,” Turk said. “We did not turn down our intensity at all.

“Offensively, we worked very well together when it came to distributing and moving the ball around. This is what helps us be so successful as a team. This year, our team has seemed to gain new level of confidence and it is really working for us.”

Sophomore Nataly Bravo came home with 19 points, three assists, and seven steals.

“Our bench is getting better every day and they did a great job today playing good defense and getting a lot of rebounds,” Bravo said. “We have been working a lot and our defense is getting better.”

Junior Caroline Burke added 10 points, three rebounds, and eight steals.

“Caroline has definitely brought some firepower onto the defensive end,” Ellie Turk said.

Arantxa Fonseca contributed 12 points, five rebounds, three assists, five steals, and three blocks.

Christie Sarkis had four rebounds and two steals, while Faith Wilson had three steals.

“We had a chance to play all of our bench,” Foothills Christian head coach Joey Turk said.
