NATIONAL CITY – Two teams that expect to compete for a league championship in the weeks ahead got together for a tournament game at the Sweetwater New Year’s Classic on Tuesday.
The El Capitan Vaqueros, however, ran laps over the Monte Vista Monarchs, 64-11.
The Vaqueros got 24 points, including a trio of three-pointers, from Mackenzie Curtis in the victory.
Curtis had nine points in the first quarter
Junior Jacey Danks added eight points for El Capitan, which improved its record to 8-6.
The Lady Vaqueros led 18-4 after one quarter and never looked back.
Freshman Kaylee Cole had seven points for El Capitan, while junior teammate Stephanie Yeakle added six points.
Cole had a three-pointer in the second quarter.
Sophomore Tiffany Bickford and junior Emma Driskill both chipped in with five points for El Cap.
Bickford knocked down a three-pointer in the opening period.
Monte Vista freshman Angelina De Leon had a team-high four points.
Sami Gonzalez had a three-pointer in the second quarter for the Monarchs, who fell to 6-7 overall.
“El Cap forced us to adjust defensively,” Monte Vista head coach Sabrina Jimenez said. “We tried throwing different defenses at them but they were able to pick each one apart.
“They are a well-coached, respectable program with a lot of assets on their team. Their defense forced us into making a lot of turnovers, and we had to pay the price. Offensively, we could never get going, and my girls will have to figure out that details matter in the upcoming games.”
El Capitan will face San Pasqual at the tournament on Thursday at 10:30 a.m.
Monte Vista will be in action against the host Red Devils on Thursday at 7:30 p.m.
