2021 EAST COUNTY PREP GIRLS BASKETBALL
EastCountySports.com staff report
SPRING VALLEY – Mount Miguel High’s legendary girls head basketball coach Robbie Sandoval won the 500th game of his coaching career on Tuesday night, as the Matadors defeated Santana, 88-9, in a Grossmont Hills League game.
Sandoval is only the second East County girls’ basketball coach to reach the 500-win plateau (behind Santana’s Wade Vickery, who had a 610-119 career won-loss record) and only the sixth girls’ coach in San Diego County history (along with Poway’s Jay Trousdale, who just passed the 700-win mark on March 27, La Jolla Country Day’s Terri Bamford, who also coached at San Pasqual and has well over 600 wins, Ray Jindra, of Hilltop, who scored 567 wins, and Peggy Brose, who went 518-239 with Mt. Carmel and Rancho Bernardo) to reach the lofty milestone.
“I feel like it is a great accomplishment for the program,” Sandoval said. “It is because of the kids and the parents who support the kids that the program has remained positive through all these years.”
The outcome of this one was never going to be in doubt but it was unfortunate for Sandoval’s latest superstar on The Mount, Jennifer Moreno, that she would not be able to play in the noteworthy game because of an injury.
Ixchel Rojo stepped in and scored 22 points and handed out 10 assists, while teammates Nataly Bravo finished with 21 points, and Arantxa Fonseca added 19 points for Las Matadoras.
Also showing out for the record were senior Jacquee Brown (14 points) and sophomore Zanna Hurst (12 points).
For Sandoval and the girls’ basketball program, there seems to be no end to the two decades of success the team has achieved.
Twenty consecutive Grossmont League championships (Sandoval’s teams have won a league title in every season he has coached) and seven CIF titles are just part of the legacy.
Sandoval has mentored several top players, many of which have gone on to play at the Division I college level. But he has also helped carve success for others on and off the court.
Even as his best players graduate, his participation with the Elite Basketball Organizations (EBO) along with his championship reputation, has allowed Sandoval the ability to continue to produce top county talent and win basketball games that only a few coaches in state history can match.
“I look at it like we have reached a milestone for the program itself, which includes the parents and the players, and everyone that has been involved with this athletic program in the last 21 years,” said the coach.
