Cavers enjoy Ryan’s confines; Lions win

EL CAJON – The San Diego Cavers felt comfortable in cavernous Ryan Athletic Center on Thursday, downing host Christian High, 74-41, in a Western League matchup on Thursday night.

Patrick Perez scored 13 points for the Patriots, including three-point plays of both varieties in the fourth quarter, knocking down a long one, then, getting an and-one late.

Junior Nelson hit a pair of three-pointers in the first quarter as the Patriots started out very well, leading 9-3.

However, San Diego High would lead 19-9 at the end of the first quarter.

“We struggled to score for a stretch after that and couldn’t seem to put together any sustained scoring runs,” Christian High head coach Tim Brown said.

Jack St. Fleur scored six points in the second quarter, although Christian trailed at halftime, 38-23.

Christian High eventually cut the lead to single digits again in the third quarter.

“We went cold from the outside and weren’t able to catch them,” Brown added. “Perez did a good job rebounding.”

Sophomore Hunter Provience scored nine points for the Patriots.

Idaho State-bound senior A.J. Burgin, of the Cavers, scored 23 points as San Diego (11-12) improved to 3-3 in the league standings.

LIBERTY CHARTER 84, O’FARRELL 55 – On Senior Night, the Lions won for the eighth straight game and moved closer to the Summit League championship with the win over the Falcons.

The Lions were in control pretty early in this one, leading 21-12 at the end of the first quarter and 43-27 at halftime.

Liberty Charter won the first meeting 70-48 back on Jay 4.

Liberty Charter is 14-6 overall and currently ranked third in the Division V section standings.


HIGH TECH CHULA VISTA 57, MOUNTAIN EMPIRE 40 – The winless RedHawks lost to the Bruins in a league matchup despite a team-high 12 points from freshman Corey Vann.

The Bruins are 5-2 in the Summit League, two games behind league leader Liberty Charter (7-0 Summit).
