Mentors meet again but Dean lists 39

CHULA VISTA – In the annual matchup between former Monte Vista teammates now opposing head coaches Mike Tully and Marty Ellis, it was Ellis’ Olympian Eagles that got the better of Tully and the Monarchs, 80-65, on Friday night.

However, the night belonged to Eagle junior guard Tyrone Dean, who dropped 39 points on Monte Vista as Olympian rallied from an early deficit.

He got the better of the Monarchs’ Brandon Tully in the scoring dept., although Tully put up 30 total points, as well, including three three-pointers. He also grabbed 14 rebounds.

Monte Vista took off for a 17-10 lead after one quarter, however, the Eagles led 38-37 at halftime.

The Eagles outscored the Monarchs 20-12 in the third quarter to start controlling the game.

Mondo Rasing had 15 points for the Monarchs, He also knocked down three threes.

Isaiah Hilke had a monster game on the glass, corralling 19 total rebounds for Monte Vista. He also added seven points in the game.

The win gets the Eagles off to a 2-0 start under Ellis, the former Monarch star, who has built a solid program at Olympian.

Monte Vista, meanwhile, fell to 7-2.

 

STEELE CANYON 69, MAR VISTA 37 – The Cougars had a strong victory over the winless Mariners on Friday night to move to 5-4 on the season.

Junior Alex Jenkins scored 20 points for SCHS.

Senior Camrien Hunt added 10 points for the Cougars.

Both Cougar stars had six rebounds apiece, while Hunt added three steals.

Steele Canyon led 20-6 after the first quarter against Mar Vista (0-8).

Steele Canyon will face Christian High next.

 

EL CAJON VALLEY 44, CRAWFORD 40 – The Braves were asleep early but woke up for a huge comeback to beat the host Colts.

Crawford led 19-4 after the first quarter but the Braves got the score reasonably close to 24-18 at halftime.

The Braves outscored the Colts 11-6 in the fourth quarter for the comeback win.

El Cajon Valley improved to 4-5 overall.

The score was tied at 40-all with just 30 seconds remaining when a Braves player intercepted an inbounds pass right underneath his own basket and easily put it in for the decisive score.

 

FOOTHILLS CHRISTIAN 75, ESCONDIDO CHARTER 68 – The Knights had an impressive comeback of their own, overtaking the White Tigers after trailing by double digits early.

It was the first win of the season for Foothills Christian in five starts.

Escondido Charter led 19-8 after the first quarter before Foothills Christian got it in gear in time for the second half.

Senior Joseph Hankins led Foothills Christian with 26 points, while senior teammate Nick Hadge added 24 points.

The Knights led 34-31 at halftime and then extended the lead to 15 points after three quarters.

 

SCRIPPS RANCH 89, MOUNT MIGUEL 45 – The Falcons clubbed the Matadors to improve to 9-2 on the season. Mount Miguel fell to 3-6.
