Hawks basketball: earn No. 1 in county

SAN MARCOS — The improving San Diego Christian College men’s basketball can noiw lay claim as the No. 1 small-college team in San Diego County.
On Saturday (Nov. 5), the Hawks traveled to North County to meet the University of Saint Katherine, the defending Cal-Pac Conference champion and participant in the 2022 NAIA National Championship. And the Hawks came away with a 77-73 triumph.
Senior forward Greg Crew (Woodland Hills) registered team-highs of 28 points and 9 rebounds, as the Hawks led the entire second half to stave off the Firebirds in non-conference action at the USK Sports Complex.
Chew was unstoppable near the basket, hitting 10-of-14 shots from the floor, including 6-of-7 in the second half when he tallied 17 of his points.
On the flip side, the Firebirds’ Bryan Baptiste scored 25 of hs career-high 37 points in the second half, but the rest of his teammates were just 13-of-36 in field goal shooting to hamper the comeback effort.
Saint Katherine held an early 22-9 lead before San Diego Christian took over, taking the lead for keeps at the midway point of the first half before tkaing a 34-31 halftime lead, as Chew was supported by 16 points from senior Cameron “The King” Dashiell (La Habra).

The margin reached 67-52 with seven minutes left, capping a 58-30 scoring run to break the contest open.
San Diego Christian (1-0) and Saint Katherine (0-1) now enter difficult scheduled against NCAA Division I schools.
The Hawks next face Cal State Bakersfield and Grand Canyon before entering Golden State Athletic Conference play.
The Firebirds (0-2) next meet Southern Utah and Long Beach State.
Women
Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University of Arizona EAGLES
PRESCOTT, Ariz. — In a battle between unbeaten ballclubs, the San Diego Christian College women’s basketball team suffered their first setback of the season, falling to host Embry-Riddle University (Ariz.), 78-61. Both sides entered with 2-0 marks.
The Hawks were down by just a point after the opening period, but the Eagles (3-0) went on a 20-7 second-quarter run to pill away.
Despite the loss, San Diego Christian displayed improvement with balanced scoring throughout the contest.
Once again, Haylie Anderson led the Hawks with 17 points. Meanwhile, Cynnadie Whatley (15 points) and Jamee “J.J.” Joseph (14) were close behind. Joseph also posted five assists.
Embry-Riddle was picked to finish sixth in the Sunshine State Conference 2022-23 regular season standings in a preseason poll of conference coaches.
On Wednesday (Nov. 9) San Diego Christian plays an exhibition game against San Diego State at Viejas Arena. The next official regular-season game is on Thursday (Nov. 11), entertaining Rocky Mountain College at the Red Shield Gym at the Salvation Army Center in El Cajon, starting at 5 p.m.
