Hawks scoring falls short to Mustangs

FLETCHER HILLS — No matter how many times former San Diego Christian College head coach Kelvin Starr returns to San Diego County to play his old ballclub, The Master’s University always receives the best effort from the Hawks.
Included was a 2021 verdict when the Mustangs were ranked No 1 nationally by the NAIA.
On Thursday (Jan. 12), another such effort was offered by SDCC, which scored a season-best 50 points in the second half, but The Master’s hung on for an 82-74 victory in Golden State Athletic Conference action at Grossmont College.
Comingh off a career-high scoring effort, Josh O’Campo again paced the Hawks with 25 points, featuring 18 points in the second half to trim an 17-point deficit into single digits.
However, forward Victor Ohia Obioha tallied 13 of his 24 points in the second for The Master’s, while Caden Starr (the coach’s son) added 14 points and 7 rebounds.
Much of the comeback can be attributed to the Hawks bench, which out-scored TMU, 31-8, including double-figures scoring from Ausage Siamu (14 points) and Ryan Blackmon (11).
Meanwhile, the defense of the Hawks (3-6 overall, 2-6 GSAC) ) forced 21 turnovers from The Master’s (12-5, 5-3 GSAC).
The brief homestand ends Saturday, when San Diego Christian entertains Westmont, starting at 2 p.m. at Grossmont College.

The Master’s 92, San Diego Christian 62
FLETCHER HILLS — San Diego Christian College freshman forward Brianna Humphries registered a career-best 30 points, but the Hawks fell to visiting The Master’s University.
The visiting Mustangs received balanced scoring by recordig 46 points in each half, racing to a 92-62 decision in Golden StateAthletic Conference action Thursday (Jan. 12) at Grossmont College.
In order for The Master’s to move into a tie for the GSAC lead, the Mustangs needed the win while the co-leaders — including NAIA second-ranked Westmont — both needed to lose.
The Master’s kept up its side of the ledger, but they will remain in third place after the co-leaders — Westmont and Hope International — also posted victories.
The Mustangs scored consistently throughout behind ind 30 points from 6-foot-0 guard Ella Brubaker., an NAIA All-America selection as a freshman last season.
The big forward line of TMU (11-4 overall,5-3 GSAC) dominated. Forward Lexi Hernandez posted a double-double with 13 points and 13 rebounds, while 6-foor-4 red-shirt freshman Madeline Cooke added 9 pointsand 8 boards.
For San Diego Christian (5-11, 1-6 GSAC), forward Brianna Humphries registered her career-best on 14-for-25 shooting, topping her previous best of 18 against against Life Pacific in the Hawks’ GSAC home opener in early December.
Meanwhile, Sterling Edwards came off the bench to add 9 points, and Elaina Martinez had 8.
The 92 points were ther most allowed by SDCC — not counting contest against NCAA Division I schools — in three seasons, last falling to Westmnt,which scored 96 points on Feb.27, 2020.
San Diego Christian completes the homestand on Saturday, hosting nationally-ranked Westmont at Grossmont College, starting at noon.
