LA MESA — In a contest to decide the top contender in the Grossmont Valley League, the ansqwer wwas decided rather quickly.
Depsite a final score which seemed competitive, Helix mounted a double-digit lead less than six minites into Fridays’s (Jan. 19) contest , then extendee the margin to 20 by the half to down visiting Granite Hills, 69-58, at Caledonia Gymnasium.
The decision dropped the Eagles from a first-place deadlock and into a second-place deadlock with the Highlanders.
Except for the COVID-19 delayed season, Granite Hills has only won once in La Mesa over the past decade.
Meanhile, frontrunning Steele Canyon overcame a terrible first half by tallying 33 points in the third quarter to stop Valhalla.
The Cougars held the lead at the intermission, but by only a 25-13 count before jetting shouted at in the locker room.
Individual scoring i both GVL contests were not reported. The same could also se said of El Cajon Valley at Santana.
In the Grossmont Hills League, Monte Vista starter slow beofre whipping Grossmont, 68-35. The Foothillers held a lead of 12-8 through the first period before the roof caved in.
Mount Miguel nopped host El Capitan, 64-56. The ballclubs were even at the half, 23-all, before the Matadors pulled away.
The City League saw co-leader Christian dominate Kearny, 69-19, while Patrick Henry failed to report.
There were also no reports from Julian, Ramona and Foothills Christian. However, Mountain Empire did report its setback to host Bayfront Charter of Chula Vista, with the Sharks winning, 53-30.
