Coastal Classic Ends In Wins And A Tie

LAKESIDE – In the first game of a double-header the El Capitan Vaqueros would claim a 5-0 victory over the visiting Fallbrook Warriors on Saturday (Mar. 9) in Coastal Classic tournament action.

El Capitan would take an early 1-0 lead thanks to Alanna Christiaens (1-3, R, RBI, 3B) who roped a triple to center field to bring in Aubrey Thorne (1-2, 3 R). Their second run of the inning came on a wild pitch which allowed Christiaens to race home.

They would extend their lead in the third inning on an error by Fallbrook when Alyssa Fierro (1-3) hit a ball that was misplayed thus allowing Thorne who had led off the inning with a base hit to plate and give them a 4-0 lead. Previously, in the third inning Kylee Frazier (2-2, R) scored on a passed ball.

Shelby Vars started for the Vaqueros and picked up the win. She would allow zero runs on three hits over five innings in which she struck out two and walked one.

Hana Winton took the loss for the Warriors as she allowed five runs on seven hits while striking out 11 and walking two over five innings.

 

EL CAPITAN 1, CHRISTIAN 1, tie  – Despite combining for 13 hits both teams could only manage one run a piece thus a tie in Coastal Classic action.

An RBI double by Sienna Staite allowed Sammy Baca who led off the inning with a base hit to come around from second and score giving them a 1-0 lead.

Sophomore Ava Barrios for Christian was able to set the Vaqueros down despite a hit here and there until the seventh inning when they finally broke through.

Trailing by a run in the bottom of the seventh inning Dominique Garcia on a full count would slice a single to right field. She would be lifted for a courtesy runner who came around all the way from first base to score to tie the game 1-1 when Fierro hit a fly ball to center field for a double.

Barrios despite being in a jam with Fierro on second and no outs was able to retire the next three batters to end the inning and the game was declared a tie.

Alyssa Cole the sophomore for El Capitan drew the start. She allowed the one run on seven hits over 7 innings in which she walked 2.

Barrios over 7 innings allowed one run on seven hits while striking out three and walking one.

For Christian, Tyler Krystek led the way in hitting as she went 2-for-3 on the day.

El Capitan on the day the splits and is now 2-1-3 while Christian is now 5-0-1.

 

HELIX 4, MISSION VISTA 2 – All tied up at 2-2 in the bottom of the fifth inning junior Lauren Farace came up to bat and took a 2-1 count and belted a deep fly ball to right field over the fence for what would be the game-winning two-run home run on Saturday to claim the victory over Mission Vista.

Early on the Highlanders would take a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning thanks to Tatiana Hernandez-Ahmu who drove in LaNiah Broom who tripled to lead off the inning.

Helix would extend its lead thanks to Ta’Tiannah Wright who belted a solo home run to make it 2-0.

Baylie O’Neill would help Mission Vista get back in the contest as she drove in a pair of runs in the top of the fifth inning to tie the score.

Farace who would come into the contest in relief would garner the win. She would allow one run on two hits over two innings of work in which she walked one and struck out one. Katelyn Woodland who led off in the circle for Helix allowed three hits and one run over four innings in which she fanned 9 and walked 1.

Wright, Lilianna Benabdeljalil, Broom, Kamilah Jones, Farace, Hernandez-Ahmu, and Clarissa Torres all had one hit on the day for the Highlanders.

Helix improves to 2-4 while Mission Vista also falls to 2-4 on the season.
