Career Win No. 600 for Pats’ Mitchell

EL CAJON – Christian High baseball coach Mike Mitchell  captured his 600th career ballgame Wednesday (Apr; 3)l as the Patriots defeated visiting University City, 6-1, in a non-league contest.

Mitchell, who spent his first four varsity seasons coaching at Coronado, has been with Christian since the 1996-97 school year.’ crown.

Mitchell said:

“I guess milestone wins are nice, and probably in the future. When I look back at them, they will bring fond memories, but I really enjoy everything about striving for us to be a better team each week and get better as the season goes along.”

“Our goal is to somehow figure out a way to get into the open division, so that we have a chance to be the best team in the county. “

With the power index placing Christian in league with higher-enrollment schools, Mitchell only owns seven league titles. However, Mitchell owns eight CIF section championships, including the 2021 CIF Southern California

Game Highlights

Christian 6, University City 1 – Patriots pitcher Brody Gundert struxk out eight University City battersin just four innings, \,leading Christian (8-4 overall) captured its third straight victory after stopping the Centurions.

.Gundert allowed just one hit and the run was unearned, lowering his earned-run average to a sparkling 1.75.

“Brody Gundert did a great job on the mound for us today,” said head coach Mike Mitchell. “He struggled with his command all day, but worked himself out of several difficult jams.”

Meanwhile, Logan Major entered with three no-hit frames of relief to earn the save.

The offense featured two hits each from right fielder Braeden Casey, second baseman-catcer Xavier Farnum, first baseman Johnny Rocco, and left fielder Steven McDonald.

” Steven also came up big for us at the plate with two hits including turning a single into a double with flat out hustle and excellent bass running.,” added Mitchell.

Another key “small ball” play saw D.H. Kim single, steal second base, then came home on a double by Rocco, giving Christian a 4-2 lead.

The Patriots opened the game by overcoming a double play to score twice. Including were consecutive basehits by Farnum, Kim and Casey. Anothr run came homeon a passed ball.

Christian completes a 3-games-in-3 days span by hosting Classical Academy today (Thursday) at 4 p.m.
