Monte Vista 5, Montgomery 3
SPRING VALLEY — On Thursday (Apr. 16), Monarchs pitcher Michael Ortiz captured his fourth victory of the season, tossing a complete game to defeat Montgomery, one of Olympian’s chief rivals. Ortiz struck out four Aztecs and walked just one.
Monte Vista (10-8 overall) defeated Montgomery for the first time since 2020, snapping a 30-game losing streak to the Aztecs, who had outscored the Monarchs 26-3 during that stretch, including two shutouts.
The Monarchs’ offense provided early support with two quick runs to seize control. The damage came courtesy of second baseman Adrian Gutierrez.
With left fielder Ben Kurtz aboard, Gutierrez drove an outside fastball over the right-field fence for a 2-0 lead.
Montgomery (8-9) broke through with a run in the fifth inning, but Monte Vista answered with a three-run frame, highlighted by a home run from Reece Williams. Kurtz and Gutierrez, who each collected two hits, both scored on the play.
For the Aztecs, a pair of seniors led the offense. Center fielder Marco Reyes recorded three hits from the leadoff spot, while shortstop Noah Flores added two hits.
Monte Vista, now riding a four-game winning streak, will open Grossmont Valley League play next Thursday (Apr. 23) by hosting Steele Canyon at 4 p.m.
