SPRING VALLEY (5-11-26) – Led by the duo of Sophomore Sophia Jackel and Senior Ily Barclay, the Steele Canyon Cougars reversed their fortunes and rallied to claim a 10-2 victory over the visiting Santana Sultans on Monday afternoon in a battle for first place in the Grossmont Hills league.
In the latest chapter of the rivalry between the Steele Canyon Cougars and Santana, both Jackel and Barclay drove in 8 of the team’s 10 runs as they also combined to go 5-for-7 at the plate, including each homering.
Jackel would start the Cougar scoring as she drew a walk in the bottom of the first inning to bring home Tevia Cohen to make it 1-0.
Santana in the top of the fourth thanks to a pair of errors by the Cougars would push across two runs to take a 2-1 lead.
However, the momentum would swing back the Cougars way when in the bottom of the fourth inning Barclay would smash a ball deep over the right field fence for the go-ahead grand slam for her second home run of the season and retake the lead 5-2.
Steele Canyon would add more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning when Jackel belted her fourth dinger of the season a three run shot over the center field fence to extend the lead to 10-2.
Ashlyn Darrow who in the previous match up only allowed one hit over five innings while walking three and striking out four in the 10-victory couldn’t match that feat as the Cougars figured her out as the Sultans starter allowed 10 runs on 11 hits over six innings in which she waked three and struck out six in the loss.
Reversing her numbers from the last contest against Santana in which she only lasted one and two-thirds of an inning in which she allowed four runs on two hits while walking five and striking out two Cougars ace Belle Will this time around only allowed two runs on four hits over seven innings in which she struck out seven in the win.
Santana with the loss drops to 14-11 overall and 5-2 in league play while Steele Canyon is heating up for a playoff run as they are now winners of four in a row and eight of their last nine contests to improve to 16-11 overall and 6-2 which moves them into first place with a one game lead.
The Sultans who up until this point were in first place will need to beat cross town rival West Hills at West Hills on Tuesday to finish up league play in order to claim a piece of the league title.
Steele Canyon with the victory has clinched themselves no worse than a share of the league crown hope that the Wolf Pack can somehow pull out the victory against the Sultans on Tuesday and if that does happen will be crowned Grossmont Hill league champions outright. The Cougars will finish up their regular season against Ramona on Thursday.
