SPRING VALLEY — The season might have been the best opportunity for Monte Vista to claim a league title in 30 years. But that disappeared when Steele Canyon swept the Monarchs in April.
So what’s the next best thing to do? Play spoiler.
On Thursday (May 14), the first-place deadlock in the Grossmont Valley League was broken after Monte Vista closed with five unanswered runs to shock visiting Santana, 6-2.
Thus, Steele Canyon is guaranteed at least a share of the GVL title; the cougars close the regular season with a ballgame at West Hills on Friday.
All Santana can do is hope for another upset to backdoor its way to a share f the crown.
Some think there might be an upset chance after the Wolf Pack JV fired a no-hitter at the Cougars on Wednesday.B ut will the Pack shoe enough varsity-level pitching remains to be seen.
Meanwhile, Monte Vista celebrated Senior Day by bouncing back from an early 2-1 deficit.
Monarchs junior right-hander van Virto overcame some early wildness to fire a complete-game, five-hitter for his third consecutive victory.
Virto struck out four Steele Canyon batters, lowering his season earned-run average t 1.25 (He never faced ECVHS)
Meanwhile, Reece Williams provided the heroics on offense by driving home four runs.
A basehit by Williams, the third baseman, drove in a pair of runs to give MonteVista a 3-2 lead in the third.
Then in the fifth, Williams launches a two-run homer to left field, also scoring Virto (leadoff single).
The runs for Santana (12-15) were knocked home by senior Xander Bennett and sophomore Tatum Morehouse (double).
Monte Vista’s record moves to 17-11 after going 8 -19 last season.
Elsewhere, Mount Miguel completed a sweep of ECVHS, 21-1. Matadors senior Mekhi Yancy belted a three-run homer, sending the Braves to their 110th consecutive league loss (def. Monte Vista, 2-1, on May 6, 2015).
