LAKESIDE – In a wild SAN DIEGO CIF softball second round winner’s bracket contest on Friday the sixth -seeded El Capitan Vaqueros did their darndest to come from behind and rally from a large deficit but would ultimately come up short as the tenth-seeded Scripps Ranch Falcons held on to the 8-7 victory.

Despite trailing 6-0 after only half an inning of play the Vaqueros would score in the bottom of the inning thanks to Addison Higuera who drove in a run. They would score another run in the bottom of the second inning when the Falcons committed an error which led to Gabrielle Garcia scoring to make it 7-2.

El Capitan would continue to chip away at the deficit as they scored runs in both the fourth and fifth innings on a Ciara Bernardini sacrifice fly and a two out double by sophomore Brynlie Ford in the fifth to pull within 7-4.

The Falcons would score an insurance run in the top of the seventh inning to extend their lead to 8-4.

The run scored by Scripps Ranch would be pivotal as the Vaqueros would mount a furious rally in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Starting with leadoff batter Higuera reaching on an error, Cassidy Sterling singling followed by Quinnley Morehouse singling to right field to load the bases the Vaqueros were in business.

After Ford hit into a fielder’s choice in which Higuera was thrown out at home for the first out the following batter Gwe Hill laced a line drive double to center field that allowed both Sterling and Kalli Godwin to plate to make it 8-6. A couple of batters later with two outs Sofia Simone who on the day tallied three hits including one in the seventh that brought the Vaqueros within 8-7. Unfortunately, the luck of the Vaqueros would run out as Bernardini would ground out to end the game.

Senior Makenna Burton who threw all seven innings for the Vaqueros would take the loss as she allowed eight runs on ten hits while striking out nine.

El Capitan falls to 14-13 with the loss and will next play Mt. Carmel in a third round elimination game on Saturday.
