CHULA VISTA – In a continuation of the come from behind theme for teams from the East County the third-seeded Steele Canyon Cougars continued their torrid hot streak as they rallied past the second-seeded Otay Ranch Mustangs 9-4 in San Diego Section Division I softball second round action Friday afternoon.
Steele Canyon would strike first as Ariana Angotti drove in the first run of the game in the top of the second inning to give them an early 1-0 lead.
Otay Ranch would answer with four runs in the bottom of the third inning thanks to multiple base hits and an error that led to a pair of runs.
After chipping away with runs scored in the fourth and fifth innings the Cougars would tie the game in the top of the sixth inning on an RBI single by senior Tevia Cohen.
Freshman Avigail Hendricks who was called upon in relief and came into the game in the bottom of the third inning after the Mustangs had taken a three-run lead and would really put the clamps down on the Mustangs scoring wise as she would shut them down the rest of the way.
With the score still tied at 4-4 the Cougars would break the game open as Marina Gonzalez drove in a pair of runs to make it 6-4 and Sophia Jackel would help to extend the lead when she singled in another pair of runs and in the process the Mustangs would commit an error which led to another run scoring to give them a 9-4 lead.
Despite allowing a pair of base hits in the bottom of the seventh inning Hendricks would strike out the next batter for the second out and get the final out via a ground ball out to end the game and complete the comeback victory.
Hendricks who picked up the win would toss four and two-thirds innings in relief in which she allowed no runs on four hits while walking one and striking out two.
Steele Canyon not only came up big in the rally but also out hit the Mustangs by 15-9 total on the day. Leading the charge for the Cougars was Agnotti who tallied three hits in four at-bats while Ily Barclay, Cohen, Hendricks, and Belle Will each had two hits on the day.
With the win the Steele Canyon Cougars not only continue their hot streak with their seventh win a row to move to 19-11 overall but in the process make it to the semi-finals for the second time in the last three seasons.
