SAN DIEGO CIF DIVISION I PLAYOFFS
CHRISTIAN 5, OTAY RANCH 0
CHULA VISTA – Senior Ava Barrios was back in true form on Saturday as she fanned 12 Mustangs as the tenth-seeded Christian Patriots came away with the big road victory over second-seed Otay Ranch by a score of 5-0 in San Diego Section DI third round elimination action.
Barrios who over the course of the season gained her form of being one of the best pitchers really stepped up as she went all seven innings in which she shut down the Mustangs offense while scattering five hits while only walking two and punching out twelve to earn the victory and keep the Patriots season going.
Offensively the Patriots out hit the Mustangs by a tally of 9-5 and would early on take advantage of opportunities presented to them in the top of the first inning.
After Lily Reyes led off the game with a base hit and Keytyn Ruis was hit by a pitch, Samantha Baca with one out would drive both of them in as she laced a triple to right field which was followed by Keeleyana Carrrizosa driving in the other run of the inning to give them a 3-0 lead.
Those three runs would hold up but the Patriots would tack on another pair of runs in the top of the seventh inning when Baca doubled in a run with two outs followed by Carrizosa driving in another run to finish out the scoring.
Despite a leadoff walk to start the bottom of the seventh inning Barrios settled down and retired the next three batters to end the game.
Christian with the win evens their overall record at 14-14-1 and will now move onto the semis to be played Tuesday afternoon where they will face another east county team in third-seeded Steele Canyon for the right to play for the CIF Division I championship. In order for that to occur the Patriots will have to defeat the Cougars twice while the Cougars only have to win once.
