CIF SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA REGIONAL PLAYOFFS

East County’s final two softball representatives saw their postseason runs end in the opening round of the CIF Southern California Regional Championships on Tuesday.
At Temecula, seventh-seeded El Capitan battled second-seeded Great Oak early before the Wolfpack pulled away for a 9-4 victory in Division III regional play.
The Vaqueros (15-15) matched Great Oak through the opening inning and remained within striking distance after collecting 13 hits, but defensive miscues proved costly as El Capitan committed four errors that helped the hosts capitalize on scoring opportunities.
Junior Sofia Simone paced the Vaqueros offense, going 3-for-4 and scoring twice. Senior Ciara Bernardini added a pair of hits and two runs scored, while sophomore Isabella Farris also collected two hits. Addison Higuera and freshman Cassidy Sterling each recorded two-hit performances, while Kylee Frazier drove in two runs.
El Capitan built a 4-3 lead through the first four innings, but Great Oak responded with six unanswered runs over the final three frames. The Wolfpack managed only seven hits but took advantage of walks, hit batters, and El Capitan errors to advance.
Higuera struck out six batters over four innings in the circle, while senior Makenna Burton worked the final two frames.
Meanwhile, in Division V regional action, sixth-seeded San Bernardino erupted for eight runs in the second inning and held off third-seeded Monte Vista, 9-6, in Spring Valley.
The Monarchs (19-14) actually struck first with a run in the opening inning and later mounted a seventh-inning rally, scoring three times, but could not overcome the early deficit.
Monte Vista out-hit San Bernardino 11-7, but four defensive errors proved costly as the Cardinals turned their big second inning into a lead they would never relinquish.
The losses conclude the 2026 season for both East County programs.
El Capitan reached the CIF Southern California Regional playoffs after a strong late-season push, while Monte Vista earned a Division V regional berth following its CIF San Diego Section championhip run.
