Matadors run it up; Patriots still alive

SPRING VALLEY (2-12-17) — Mount Miguel went on a scoring rampage that swept Escondido 77-61 in a non-league game at the Matadors’ dome on Saturday (Feb. 11).
The Matadors rolled their record to 15-10 with four players hitting double figures, including MIKEECE DUNBAR, who had 16 points and 3 treys.
DARIAN NORWOOD led the Matadors with 17 points and 11 rebounds and one assist.
RICKY HARVEY tossed in 13 points and hit 9 of 10 from the floor. He also grabbed 4 rebounds and 4 steals, while JAMES ALLEN added 11 markers, grabbed 5 rebounds and 5 assists.
“After last night’s close game (a 12-point loss to Granite Hills on Friday, Feb. 10) we’re trying to stay afloat,” said Matadors coach JAY ROWLETT. “Granite Hills got the league title. We’re going to try to finish off next week (2 games) and then we have the playoffs.”

CHRISTIAN 51, CORONADO 41 – Christian closed the gap against defending champion Coronado with Saturday’s (Feb. 11) Central League victory with two games remaining.
NaSHOM CARTER led the Patriots with 23 points, grabbed 6 rebounds, dished 2 assists and made 3 steals.
DOMANIC SAFARTA pitched in 12 points and JACKSON LARSEN added 11 and 6 rebounds.
“We grinded down in the second quarter,” said Patriots assistant coach TIM BROWN, referring to the 16-4 advantage Christian held over Coronado in that period. “This is the third time we have played them this year. It’s a really good road win – we hit some really big free throws in the fourth quarter.”
Christian (7-3, 18-8) still has an outside shot to share the Central League title with the Islanders (9-1) providing the Patriots win their final two games and Coronado loses the final two. Point Loma also currently sits at 7-3 in league play.
The win Saturday night exacted a bit of revenge for a 70-64 home loss to the Islanders back on Jan. 17.
