LOS ANGELES – After a humbling 45-13 home loss to fellow Open Division contender La Costa Canyon last week, No. 11 Mount Miguel (2-1) looked much sharper on the road against Loyola (Los Angeles) (1-1), mashing out a 21-0 victory.

The Matadors struck first in the opening quarter, with Jayden Hunter powering a 14-yard pitch play to the right side and shrugging off a would-be tackler en route to the end zone. That early score set the tone, and Mount Miguel carried a 7-0 lead into halftime.

Despite a slow start to their passing game last week, the Matadors’ rushing attack dominated Loyola, who had relied heavily on the ground in previous games.

Late in the third quarter, Mount Miguel extended their lead with a 19-yard rushing touchdown by Zane Rottier, who rushed for 100 yards.

Hunter capped the scoring with his second rushing touchdown of the day, putting the game out of reach with under nine minutes remaining in the third quarter on a 27-yard run

Delontay Williams had a 47-yard reception from quarterback Jeremiah Loper early in the game for the Matadors.

Later, Brandon Arrington had a 50-yard reception from Loper, where he showcased his ability to make a play rather than just all-out speed, as he tipped the ball to himself against good coverage to come down with the play.

Arrington had five receptions for 97 yards.

A.J. Logan added another long play later in the game, turning a screen pass into a 48-yard gain with the Matadors leading 14-0 in the fourth.

Loper finished with 257 yards through the air.

Defensively, Gianni Porfilio forced a fumble for Mount Miguel.

Frank Fanua and E. J. Stevens had sacks for the Matadors.

Mount Miguel’s defense, which struggled against La Costa Canyon, was stingy against the Cubs, holding Loyola scoreless and limiting their rushing attack. The road win is a statement for the Matadors, who were looking to prove they had closed the gap after falling to Loyola in Spring Valley last season.

“We are almost there as a team,” Mount Miguel head coach Verlain Betofe said. “Nice way to bounce back after last week against the No. 60 team in the state. We still got a lot of work to do but we are up for the challenge.”
