PACIFIC BEACH — If Mission Bay couldn’t solve a freshman pitcher earlier in the week, the outlook didn’t improve against Christian sophomore Walker Kane.
The result followed form.
Kane carried a shutout into the fifth inning, while the Patriots jumped out to a 6-0 lead by the second inning, completing a three-game Eastern League sweep of Mission Bay in Friday’s (Apr. 18) series finale at Dennis Pugh Memorial Field, 8-3.
Kane (3-1) worked 5.1 innings before allowing his only run. He struck out four Buccaneers and limited hard contact throughout.
Mission Bay’s defensive struggles continued early. Christian’s Caleb Brierley beat out a potential double-play ball, allowing the game’s first run to score just five batters into the contest. Two additional walks followed, including one to Kane that forced in another run.
The Patriots broke the game open with four runs in the second inning in a steady, methodical frame. Roman Gustin and Brierley each delivered sacrifice flies, Maximus “Max” Villalva added an RBI single, and another run scored on a Mission Bay infield error.
Offensively, Benji Molina led Christian by going 3-for-4 with two doubles and two runs scored. Xander Molina and Brierley each drove in two runs.
Christian (11-7-1 overall, 3-0 Eastern League) remains tied with Clairemont atop the standings. The Chieftains completed their own three-game sweep of Mira Mesa with an 11-0 victory, marking their first sweep of the Marauders in the 21st century.
