Eastern League
Christian 5, Clairemont 1
EL CAJON – How did Christian High pitchers Talon Brown and Roman Gustin combine to throw seven full innings without allowing a hit… and not throe a no-hitter (and extra innings was not the reason).
Brown opened Wednesday’s (May 6) Eastern League contest by allowing a lead walk and a basehit, then Clairemont. never registered another hit in the Patriots 5-1 verdict of the visiting Chieftains.
Brown, who struck out six batters, was tagged for an unearned run on a walk and an error in the third inning. Otherwise, Christian breezed in retaining its share of first place with Madison at 8-0 in league action.
Brown, a freshman, went five solid frames, but Roman Gustin may have done better in relief. The senior retired all six batters he faced over the final two Clairemont trips to the plate.
Christian (16-7-1) has defeated Clairemont in 16 of its last 18 meetings since 2013.
Walker Kane registered the game-winning RBI on a run0scoring single ti bring home Caleb Brierley in the second. Xander Molina later scored ib a double play grounder for a 2-0 lead.
In the fourth, Casey Coulter singled in two runs, then Jackson Oman singled home another.
The three-game series will finish Friday at Clairemont before Christian and Madison meet next week to decide the league championship.
