EL CAJON — Entering the weekend, there were four East County schools still alive in the lower divisions of the CIFSDS softball championships. However, only two or three could advance to next week’s semifinals — two were meeting each other!
One automatic qualifier for the Final Four is Borrego Springs, which captured the Division 5-AA upper bracket with a perfect record after stopping St. Joseph of San Marcos, 11-2, in Friday’s winner’s bracket finale.
Division 4
Liberty Charter 5, El Centro-Central 3
ALPINE – Following a heartbreaking, extra-inning setback in the postseason opener, Liberty Charter has been on a roll to avoid elimination.
The Lions (16-5 overall) again received strong pitching to first nip Pacific League champion Maranatha Christian, 3-1 then on Saturday (May 22), claimed the re-match with El Centro-Central, 5-3. Both were held at Joan MacQueen Middle School.
The victory over ECC was Liberty Charter’s first ever over the Spartans.
The contest could have been the final career outing for senior Layla Montgomery, but the Lions pitcher scattered six singles to maintain command throughout.
Montgomery only struck out a pair of ECC batters, but more importantly, did not issue a walk. One of the runs was unearned.
Leading the offense was Briza Pelayo, who blasted a two-run double in the third inning, when the Lions grabbed a 3-0 advantage. Palayo, a junior, went 3-for-3 at the plate.
Leah Donahue also added three hits. The freshman also led the ballclub by scoring twice and stealing a base.
Liberty Charter, the fourth seed, advances to the final round of the upper bracket, meeting undefeated Madison (20-9-1), the runners-up from the City League. The Lions must defeat the Warhawks twice to gain a berth in the section title game.
Division 5
Monte Vista 10, at Mount Miguel 8
At Monte Vista: The third-seeded Monte Vista Monarchs outlasted the seventh-seeded Mount Miguel Matadors, 10-8, in Saturday’s (May 23) contest.
The Monarchs (16-13 overall) gain a rematch with second-seeded SD-Southwest, which the Raiders won, 9-7. The game is on Tuesday and scheduled in Nestor (a neighborhood next to Imperial Beach).
If Monte Vista wins, a playback final is slated for Thursday to determine the Division 5 finalist.
Mount Migurl finishes 10-18, the school’s best mark since the pandemic.
Neither school reports to MaxPreps or GameChanger except for the final score.
Division 5-AA
St. Joseph 18, Julian 14
At Julian: Oh, no! The Julian Eagles scored eight times in the first inning, but the visiting Crusaders closed with nine runs. Included were six in the sixth to take the lead, then three more in the seventh.
Julian (11-14) went 1-2 in postseason play, including a victory over Guajome Park, 11-10.
St. Joseph (5-25) advances to the semifinals, needing to twice win at top-seeded Borrego Springs.
The Rams (14-9) are the Manzanita League champions. They have won all four meetings with SJA over the past two seasons, including a trio of wins this season (35-1, 19-9 and 11-2).
