SANTEE (10-19-13/Rev. 10-20-13) — It took longer than expected, but nothing took away the excitement from the first victory for Santana High head coach TIM ESTES.

"It's a great feeling, especially winning by shutout," said Estes. "We really worked on containing them and the team did a great job."

The Sultans placed a notch in the win column after junior wide receiver DAKOTA HARP posted three touchdowns and ZACH LEWIS added two more in a 35-0 pasting of visiting El Cajon Valley during Friday's (Oct. 18) homecoming at Santee Community Stadium.

Santana (1-6, 1-0 GVL) needed just two plays to open the Grossmont Valley League romp when Harp collected a 65-yard TD on a halfback option pass from TANNER WEISS.

"The (cornerback) read a run play, then I beat him deep," noted Harp. "It showed we could pull together and win."

Lewis capped the first quarter with a flanker sweep, racing 60 yards for a 14-0 cushion.

A 34-yard run by Lewis early in the second quarter pushed the margin to 21 points, then Harp secured two additional scoring passes from quarterback FRANKIE GUTIERREZ, covering 16 and 5 yards.

"But our defense also did a real good job, especially our corners," added Harp.

Santana's defense bottled in Braves quarterback, ALAN MICHAEL HARRIS, who battled without the services of East County rushing leader MATTHEW SHEARIN (injured).

"We prepared our defense to stop both their running back and quarterback, because they both can run really well," noted Estes. "But when only one of them could play, our attention obviously went to the other back and we contained him."

Leading the way was sophomore nose guard TANNER KVEDERIS, who registered a pair of sacks.

"We're just playing hard and made some lucky breaks," said Kvederis, who was able to avoid standout ECVHS offensive linemen to break into the backfield. The Braves (2-6, 0-2 GVL) advanced to inside the Santana-5 near the end of the first half, but a sharp-angle field goal attempt sailed wide to the left with five seconds remaining.

For Santana, the 35 points was one shy of its season total from its first six games combined. It was also the ballclub's first shutout since 2011, when the Sultans posted three consecutive shutouts en route to a CIFSDS championship game appearance at Qualcomm Stadium

Hillers' Last Stand not a joke

EL CAJON (10-19-13) — It was the opposite of Custer’s Last Stand.

With their backs in the shadow of the goal posts and 8.8 seconds remaining in Friday’s (Oct. 18) Grossmont homecoming game, the Foothillers came up with a game-saving tackle and a 21-19 victory.

After Steele Canyon quarterback DOMINIC WOODS-ANDERSON scored on a 1-yard plunge, the Cougars (0-2, 2-5 GHL) were planning a two-point conversion that if successful would have tied the game and sent it into overtime.

After the Cougars broke the huddle, Grossmont immediately called time out.

“Once you create a system, teams tend to know what to expect,” said Foothillers coach TOM KARLO. “Once we saw what Steele Canyon was going to do we knew they would have to take their second choice.”

LAWRENCE DICKENS took a handoff and attempted to penetrate the right side of the Grossmont line. But ANTHONY ALTON plugged the “A Gap” and made him adjust his angle. That allowed CHAZ CADWALADER to come in and finish the job.

The victory kept Grossmont in a three-way tie with West Hills and Helix in the Grossmont Hills League at 2-0. Overall, the Hilllers are 6-1.

“This game belonged to our defense,” Karlo said. “They did a marvelous job.”

For Steele Canyon on MARKELL LINDLEY’s third-quarter 5-yard touchdown run, the 5-10, 164-pound senior took the handoff and slid up the middle before dashing to the right side of the goal line. ANTHONY HERNANDEZ, the Cougars' senior right tackle, sealed his man perfectly to the inside to clear the way for Lindley to bounce to the outside. The point-after-try, however, failed.

JAKE HARR got the first score for the Foothillers on a 6-yard run when quarterback ANTHONY LAWRENCE faked a handoff and rolled to his right behind pulling center BRAD BOYCE.

When Lawrence found J.T. BARNES for a touchdown, the senior quarterback dropped back from the shotgun from the Cougars' 11 and quickly hit Barnes on a short post. He had his defender beat and caught the ball inside the 5 and coasted in for the easy score, making it 21-13.

Barnes’ catch broke the Grossmont High career touchdown reception record.

Steele Canyon made a change of quarterback by initiating Woods-Anderson in his first varsity start.

“He looked comfortable out there, and he’s going to be our quarterback from now on,” said Cougars coach SCOTT LONGERBONE.

The coach said he hopes that Woods-Anderson follows in the steps of Grossmont’s Lawrence. Of course, Longerbone was impressed by Lawrence ’s play.

“We were blitzing him from every angle but he still did more than get the job done. One thing I have to do is take my hat off to our defensive coordinator, JESSE SPENCER. He did a great job.”

On a down note Grossmont senior running back JOSH ANDERSON suffered a knee injury and is probably lost for the season.

HELIX 45, GRANITE HILLS 13 – DANIEL RODRIGUEZ and MADELINE HEASMAN and the rest of the Class of 2014 at Helix Charter will long remember their Homecoming Game … thanks to the Class of 2016.

Crowned king and queen at halftime, Rodriguez and Heasman then watched a host of sophomores destroy Granite Hills in the second half, culminating in a 45-13 victory for the Highlanders on Friday (Oct. 18) at Jim Arnaiz Field.

Four sophomores accounted for 331 of the Highlanders’ 363 total yards, plus a 91-yard kickoff return score by super sophomore ADRIAN PETTY.

Sophomore MICHAEL AUSTIN was 9-of-12 passing for 150 yards and a 60-yard touchdown pass to junior DESHAWN KEIRSEY.

Sophomore NATHAN STINSON rushed seven times for 97 yards. Petty added 56 yards on five carries, including TD runs of 2 and 7 yards. Sophomore DERRICK CLARK tacked on 23 yards on four attempts, including a 2-yard TD plunge.

“We’re playing a ton of young guys,” Helix coach TROY STARR said. “Almost all our offense came from sophomores, and at times we have three sophomores and a freshman in the secondary.”

Then there was senior star JALEN DAVIS, a Division I college recruit who returned a punt 75 yards for his fifth return TD of the season.

“That was nice” the affable Davis said. “But I love to see the young stars shine.”

Said Austin, “We’re a really young team, but that’s going to help us in the long run.

“We’re young but fast.”

Indeed. Austin tossed two long passes to Davis for a 44-yard gain that set up Petty’s first score and the 60-yarder to Keirsey that made it 17-6 at halftime.

Petty opened the second half by juggling the kickoff, then scooting left and racing 91 yards down the sideline for a 24-6 lead.

Petty scored his third touchdown with 1:18 left in the third quarter to make it 31-13.

Then, on the final snap of the third quarter, Davis showed why he is perhaps the most dangerous return man in the county, dashing 75 yards for the score and a 38-13 lead.

“We’re pretty dynamic on special teams,” Starr said. “We were able to pop a few.”

With the Grossmont Hills League win, No. 6 Helix improved to 5-2, 2-0. It was the Scotty’s eighth straight win over Granite Hills (3-4, 0-2 GHL), and they are now 25-2-1 against the Eagles since 1986, the last time Granite Hills won a playoff game on the field (the Eagles claimed a forfeit playoff win in 1997).

“Big plays in the kicking game hurt,” Eagles coach KELLAN COBBS said. “A punt return and kick return for touchdowns … we have to do a better job of stopping that.

“They’re a good team. Physical. Fast. They did a great job tonight.”

Granite Hills was playing without its leading rusher, JESSE BISBAL, who sustained a concussion in the Eagles’ 63-49 loss to Grossmont last week. Bisbal is averaging 113 yards per game and has scored eight TDs.

Starting in Bisbal’s place, junior HUNTER CREED scored on a 9-yard run on the Eagles’ opening drive for a 6-0 lead.

Four plays and 1:34 later, Helix went up 7-6 on Petty’s first touchdown.

After a three-and-out, Helix drove 62 yards in six plays to set up a 27-yard field goal by MARCUS NORRIS for a 10-6 lead.

The Highlanders needed only three plays on its next possession to make it 17-6 as Austin hit Keirsey in stride for a 60-yard scoring pass.

Petty fumbled away the Highlanders’ next possession, but he more than made up for it with his 91-yard kick return to make it 24-6.

“I just had to follow my blockers and make a move,” Petty said.

Granite Hills showed some life on its next possession, driving 80 yards in 12 plays to pull within 24-13.

SETH COLLINS, who had to sit out the first three games of the season after transferring from Helix, scored on a 1-yard QB sneak to give the Eagles hope. Collins finished with 73 yards on 16 carries.

Moments later, an onside kick recovered by NICK MARIN gave the Eagles outright optimism. But the next three plays netted zero yards, and the Eagles were forced to punt.

Helix needed only seven plays to drive 89 yards to make it 31-13 as Stinson rushed for 30 yards, Petty for 17, and Austin connected with Davis on a 14-yard pass to set up Petty’s third TD.

Splitting series at QB, Collins completed 6-of-12 passes for 48 yards, and CHRIS MEREDITH was 5-of-11 for 76 yards.

Helix got fourth-quarter interceptions by sophomore MEKHI STEVENSON and senior JELANI PRITCHARD to seal the win. In the first half, Highlanders XAVIER TUITELE had two sacks and JALEN WYATT one.

Granite Hills’ MICHAEL LADESMA had a full night. In addition to a fumble recovery on defense, he rushed four times for 19 yards, caught two passes for 31 yards, but was 0-for-2 passing.

WEST HILLS 32, VALHALLA 25 – With a 5-1 record, West Hills was looking to reverse its predecessors’ fortunes against Valhalla the past several years, seeking its first win against the Norsemen in five seasons.

On paper, it looked easy. Valhalla is rebuilding and had a 1-5 record entering Friday night’s (Oct. 18) Grossmont Hills League contest. Problem is, the Norsemen didn’t read the press clippings. With 3:45 remaining in the game, Valhalla clung to a 25-24 lead...

The game started out well for the visiting Wolf Pack. The moon was full and they were howling. Led by senior quarterback STEPHEN SCHINDLER, West Hills put together a very impressive opening drive – 22 plays consumed all but 1:43 of the initial period, with the final blow a 6-yard TD pass from Schindler to senior wide receiver PEANUT HERRADA. DANIEL McMANUS’ kick was true, and West Hills had the early lead, 7-0.

On the flip side, Valhalla ’s offense sputtered out of the gate. On the second play of the Norsemen’s opening drive, a tipped pass fell into Herrada’s arms for a quick interception at the Valhalla 29-yard line. West Hills drove quickly to the Valhalla 3-yard line, but on 3rd and goal, BRENT KEATON, DARION SMITH and TYLER BUZZELL smothered the ball carrier for a 2-yard loss. McManus supplied a chip-shot 22-yard field goal, extending the Wolf Pack lead to 10-0, less than a minute into the second quarter.

With less than two minutes to play before halftime, senior quarterback DANIEL RODRIGUEZ got the Valhalla offense moving with some nifty passes to CHRIS RAMSEY and ISAIAH EDWARDS, down to the West Hills 42-yard line. There was a slight problem, however. Only five seconds remained in the first half. Rodriguez threw a quick out to senior wide receiver JOHN TODD who just as quickly stepped out of bounds at the West Hills 33-yard line, with only 2 seconds left in the half.

EAN HENDRICKSON came in for a 50-yard field goal attempt; it cleared the uprights as time expired, giving the homecoming crowd something to cheer about before the halftime fireworks show.

The fireworks continued from halftime to the second half of football. On the first possession, Rodriguez broke free at the Valhalla 39-yard line for a 46-yard gain to the Wolf Pack 18-yard line. On the next play, Rodriguez threw a dart to Todd at the 6-yard line, but the Wolf Pack defense stiffened, forcing Hendrickson to kick a 24-yard field goal, closing the gap to 10-6, with 9:03 left in the third quarter.

On the ensuing kickoff, TAJ BROOMFIELD returned it 67 yards to the Valhalla 37, giving the Wolf Pack great field position...until, two plays later, senior linebacker GIUSEPPE CASTANOS crunched the runner and forced a fumble, which was pounced upon by sophomore linebacker LOGAN BAKER.

West Hills pulled ahead late in the third period when Schindler hit senior running back NOAH YLAGAN for a 17-yard TD pass-catch, giving the Wolf Pack a 17-6 lead at the 1:21 mark.

Schindler seemed to put the game away early in the 4th quarter when he lofted a deep pass to McManus for a 65-yard touchdown less than a minute into the final period, upping the lead to 24-6. The only problem was that somebody forgot to tell the Norsemen that they were dead meat. Less than a minute later, Rodriguez found Todd open for a 31-yard TD pass-catch. After Hendrickson split the uprights, it was a 24-13 game.

The tide started to turn on the next series. West Hills had a first down at midfield. Strong safety FABIAN YAKOU and Ramsey combined to tackle the runner for a loss. Two plays later, Baker and Castanos sacked the quarterback for a 7-yard loss, setting up a 3rd and 11 for the Wolf Pack at midfield. Senior defensive tackle BLAKE ADAMSON knifed through the line and flattened the quarterback for a 10-yard loss, forcing a punt.

Starting at their 30-yard line, the Norsemen offense quickly marched to the West Hills 30, where, on first down, Rodriguez and Todd once again teamed up, this time for a 30-yard TD pass-catch. The two-point conversion attempt went awry, but now it was a one-possession game, 24-19, with 4:48 left to play in regulation.

On the ensuing kickoff RAPHY CARR scampered 90 yards for an apparent touchdown, but offsetting personal foul penalties resulted in a re-kick. Valhalla ’s Hendrickson made sure this time that the ball sailed into the endzone for a touchback.

On second down, disaster struck the Norsemen. Castanos forced his second fumble of the game, and his counterpart Baker scooped up his second fumble recovery – and immediately sprinted 18 yards into the endzone for a Valhalla touchdown. Again, the 2 point conversion attempt failed, but Valhalla grabbed the lead for the first time, 25-24, with 3:45 remaining.

A lesser team may have folded its tent, but West Hills showed why it enjoyed a 5-1 record coming into the game. Facing a third-and-one at the Wolf Pack 29-yard line, Schindler burst through the middle of the line on a quarterback keeper, put it in high gear and motored 28 yards to the Valhalla 43-yard line. On the next play, Schindler lofted a screen pass to Ylagan for a 23-yard gain to the Norsemen 20- yard line, and on the next play, hooked up again with Ylagan to the Valhalla 3- yard line.

Schindler called his own number on the next play, squirming into the end zone from three yards out; the two point conversion was successful as West Hills re-grabbed the lead, 32-25, with 1:38 remaining in the contest. Valhalla ’s last gasp ended quickly when Rodriguez was sacked and stripped of the football. West Hills recovered the fumble to seal the deal.

For Valhalla, Rodriguez was 14-24-1 for 203 yards and 2 TDs. Receiver Todd had 8 receptions, 154 yards and 2 TDs.

On the defensive side of the ball, Baker led the troops with 15 tackles, giving him an impressive 98 tackles in 7 games – not bad for a sophomore.

MOUNT MIGUEL 35, MONTE VISTA 12 – With a full moon looming in the backdrop of what was to be the Grossmont Valley League championship, the Spring Valley match-up had a first half of exactly that type of contest. With a homecoming crowd of screaming alumni and current Mount Miguel students, the hosts decided the second half would be theirs for the taking.

The visiting Monarchs did come to play, however, with their current formula – heavy doses of running back LEE WADE and lead back, JEMEIL JACKSON, with a dollop of lead scrambler, and signal-caller THOMAS WALKER.

With 7:44 left in the first half, scrambling on a sweep right, quarterback Walker took a helmet to the knee, and that would end his night – 7 carries for 62 yards, and a touchdown to boot. This would also be the end of the Monarchs scoring assault, but still leading 12-7 at the half.

"Anytime you have a neighborhood game, it’s a rivalry, and they were well-prepared," stated Mount Miguel coach SHAUN McDADE. "We had to regroup at halftime, and breathe a little and come out and play a better second half."

They did exactly that, and scored 28 unanswered points, 14 of them after interceptions off reserve quarterback, AUSTIN CAOLE, in for the injured Walker – one pick-six for 47 yards by defensive back, AUGUSTIN BALTAZAR, and one pick-six for 30 yards by defensive back DAVAUGHN MURRAY.

Mount Miguel quarterback BRAD MORENO also had a decent night, finishing 8-11-1 for 120 yards and a touchdown throw to ALEXIS BLANCO for 25 yards, and 36 yards on the ground.

Although Monte Vista lost the contest, they have a slim chance yet to make the playoffs. The Monarchs still finished the night with 355 all-purpose rushing yards, but with only 12 points, the least amount of points scored in 5 games. It also snapped the Monarchs’ streak of 4 straight wins, not accomplished since the 2004 Monarchs did it.

Not only was this win a gift to the Mount Miguel fans, but also former alumni, and Minnesota Viking ROBERT GRIFFITH opened the game with the commemorative coin toss, which also was in favor of the Matadors. There are two league games left, stay tuned folks, this one is far from over.

FEARLESS FORECASTER – Predictions

Matadors, Monarchs, ready to Spring into action

By Bill Dickens
© East County Sports.com

SPRING VALLEY (10-17-13) — In years gone by, former Monte Vista High coach ED CARBERRY (now head coach at Southwestern College) labeled the Monte Vista-Mount Miguel game as “The Battle for Spring Valley.”

Fearless Forecaster
Last Week: 4-2 (.667)
Season: 47-18 (.723)

The city trophy has belonged to Mount Miguel for the last four seasons, including a 24-7 victory last year.

This game has championship connotations as the winner of Friday’s (Oct. 18) duel could come away with the Grossmont Valley League crown.

If Monte Vista were to spring an upset, not only would it be the Monarchs’ fifth straight victory, it would lift coach RON HAMAMOTO’s crew into the GVL lead.

The Matadors have won the last four meetings. They will need to keep that streak intact to cool off a Monte Vista crew that’s on a roll.

Running back JEMEIL JACKSON (926, 7 TDs) is the workhorse for the Monarchs, while Mount Miguel counts on BEN LOMIBAO (727, 13 TDs) to carry the rock for the Matadors.

The difference here could be Mount Miguel quarterback BRAD MORENO and receivers RASHAD HARPER, JOVON RICHADSON and DAVAUGHN MURRAY.

When it comes down to it, this should be the best game of the night... Mount Miguel 22-20.

STEELE CANYON at GROSSMONT, 7 – The Foothillers will celebrate Homecoming Friday night (Oct. 18) as they hope to take another step toward winning the Grossmont Hills League title.

Quarterback ANTHONY LAWRENCE, the East County passing leader averaging 249.2 ppg and 23 touchdowns, will lead a Grossmont offense averaging 49.8 ppg.

Lawrence has the top two targets in the GHL in CHRISTIAN BROOKS, who caught 41 passes for 500 yards and 7 touchdowns, and J.T. BARNES (27-413, 7 TDs).

Barnes is a double threat as he has scored 38 kicking points.

The Foothillers also have a versatile performer in JOSH ANDERSON, who has rushed for 408 yards and 6 touchdowns and is a top-notch return man.

Steele Canyon’s game is all about defense. SEAN McCARTHY and WILLIE FAIR are ball hawks on the defensive side of the ball for the Cougars.

Offensively the Cougars (2-4, 0-1 GHL) can be explosive when they can get the ball to versatile LAWRENCE DICKENS.

The Cougars have dominated this series of late, with five straight wins before falling a year ago to the Foothillers 42-35. Steele Canyon is certainly capable of an upset, but the Foothillers have too much firepower... Grossmont 27-12.

GRANITE HILLS at HELIX, 7 – Lopsided victories have stalked the Granite Hills Eagles the last seven years when the Eagles have faced the Highlanders in Grossmont Hills League action.

Case in point was last year’s 48-0 romp for the Highlanders. Fact is, Granite Hills has only beaten Helix one time in the last 17 years.

Give the Eagles credit going into this one because they have built an offense that knows how to put points on the board, led by running back JESSE BISBAL (678, 8 TDs) and quarterback CHRIS MEREDITH (52 of 88 for 819 yards and 7 TDs).

These teams have contrasting styles. Granite Hills is averaging 38.3 points per game, while the Highlanders are surrendering only 10.8 ppg. You know what the old adage is... a good defense will beat a good offense.

The main attraction for the Helix Highlanders continues to be versatile JALEN DAVIS. He does everything but play in the trenches. But he’ll need help from inconsistent quarterback MICHAEL AUSTIN.

If the Eagles ever had a better chance for an upset, this would be it. But don’t bet on it... Helix 23-14.

EL CAJON VALLEY at SANTANA, 7 – This game’s a toss-up, considering El Cajon Valley might be forced to go without do-it-all standout MATTHEW SHEARIN, the East County’s leading rusher who was injured in last week’s loss to Monte Vista.

For the Sultans, who are 0-6 overall, Friday’s (Oct. 18) joust in Santee will likely be their best chance for a Grossmont Valley League victory.

If El Cajon Valley is forced to go without its go-to guy, this game might be the first team that scores, wins.

Given the schematic of this encounter, odds are it will be a low-scoring affair. But when you’re dealing with the Braves it’s hard to tell because they play lop-sided games just about every other week.

Only once has Santana scored more than 7 points in a game, and that was in a 52-13 loss to Francis Parker.

On the flip side, El Cajon Valley has scored 123 points against all opponents.

The Sultans have won seven straight over the Braves, but will be hard-pressed to keep that streak intact... El Cajon Valley 21-12.

WEST HILLS at VALHALLA, 7 – In some preseason predictions West Hills was tabbed for a last place finish in the Grossmont Hills League. Doesn’t look like that’s gonna happen.

Not only is the Wolf Pack 1-0 in its GHL opener, but is 5-1 overall.

The name of the game for West Hills is defense, led by linebacker RYDEN KERR, who has logged 48 tackles, including 6 for loss. He’s also notched 5 sacks.

Valhalla’s strength is defense as well, with sophomore linebacker LOGAN BAKER anchoring the Norsemen with 72 tackles and 16 sacks.

Neither one of these teams is an offensive powerhouse, but West Hills, led by running backs JACOB SHAW and NOAH YLAGAN and quarterback STEPHEN SCHINDLER, is averaging 24 points per game. That’s 10 more than Valhalla, which is lacking a go-to guy.

The Norsemen have won 4 in a row over West Hills, including 45-17 a year ago... West Hills 27-16.

BORREGO SPRINGS vs. FOOTHILLS CHRISTIAN at Seau Field, 7 – Playing for the first time in three weeks will probably be a greater test for the Foothills Christian Knights than for visiting Borrego Springs Friday night (Oct. 18) at Seau Field.

Both teams are looking for their first Citrus League victory in their second circuit start. Overall the two teams are only 1-9 combined.

CALEB HOFFMAN will lead the charge for the Knights (1-4, 0-1 CL). He should have a big game against the winless Rams (0-5, 0-1 CL), who have scored only four touchdowns all seasons... Foothills Christian 33-6.
