EL CAJON (10-27-13) — Christian High took an early lead as PARIS MILLER scored on a 60-yard run and ZANE COFFMAN caught a 22-yard touchdown pass from MICHAEL CARRILLO for a 14-0 first-quarter lead Saturday (Oct. 26) night, pounding visiting Clairemont 49-0 in a Central League affair at Granite Hills Stadium.

“Carrillo has really improved,” said Christian offensive coordinator DAVID BEEZER. “He throws a tight spiral.

Coffman also scored on an 8-yard run and Miller scampered on his second touchdown from 9 yards out to make it 21-0.

Carrillo then wound up and fired a 45-yard scoring strike to KAI ARVAN and followed up with another bullet from 48 yards out to NICK SEXTON to make it 42-0 at halftime.

The Patriots (7-2) then coasted to the victory for their third shutout of the season. The last time the school posted four shutout, they captured the 1995 CIF championship. In addition, they only need to defeat University City to clinch a league championship for the first time since sharing the Coastal League crown with The Bishop's in 2007.

“You can’t overlook our defense because they were solid all night,” added Beezer.

“I think we’re that good a team,” noted Christian head coach MATT OLIVER. “All seven of our wins have come with a running clock.”

Christian will close the league season versus University City at Granite Hills on Friday (Nov. 1), then close the regular season with a non-league contest at La Jolla Country Day.

EL CAJON (10-26-13) — Granite Hills High put together a four-minute, game-winning drive, moving inside the 10 with 15 seconds left then gaining the deciding score on a thrilling play Friday (Oct. 25) night, leading the Eagles past visiting Steele Canyon, 17-14.

From the 8-yard line, senior quarterback CHRIS MEREDITH took a snap on the right hash from the pistol and quickly rolled to the right side. While on the run, he fired into the tightest of spaces just inside the right front pylon, where senior wide receiver JOSH LONGBRAKE had Steele Canyon's JEBARI GAUSE-BROWN draped all over him in terrific, solid red zone pass coverage.

Somehow, Longbrake secured the pass right in his numbers with his feet in the end zone, just touching the inside of the goal for the winning score.

The play came moments after Steele Canyon believed they won the contest before a penalty wiped out an interception in the closing moments.

“Our guy got intercepted in the endzone with about 15 seconds left, and then the officials called P.I. (pass interference) on us,” recalled Cougars coach SCOTT LONGERBONE. “I think this is the fourth game that we’ve lost by less than three points. It’s been the story of our season.”

Following an early Eagles field goal of 22 yards by BRYCE STRICKLAND, Steele Canyon answered on a 1-yard run by MARKELL LINDLEY for a 7-3 first-quarter advantage.

Granite Hills answered in the second quarter on a 25-yard touchdown rumble by senior running back JESSE BISBAL with 53 seconds remaining. The short, 40-yard drive was set-up when the Cougars failed to convert a fake punt with 1:09 left before the intermission, giving the Eagles enough time to secure the lead at 10-7.

Bisbal took a delayed handoff and ran out of two tackles at the line of scrimmage to escape clear to the left side, as linemen ALEX MACK and YAHIA BENCHENCE had the defensive front sealed. Two more ankle-tackle attempts were futile and JACOB BURTON already had his man engaged near the goal line to clear the way for Bisbal.

In the fourth, a touchdown pass from DOMINIC WOODS-ANDERSON to LAWRENCE DICKENS would cover 36 yards and put Steele Canyon ahead 14-10.

Woods-Anderson rolled right and threw a high floating pass while in the air toward Dickens just inside the 20-yard marker. Granite Hills senior DAVY PRESTON had very good coverage against the quick senior receiver and he jumped extremely high in the air in an attempt to deflect the pass, however, the ball was just over the reach of the 6-foot defender. Dickens came down with it at the 15 and JORDAN JOHNSON knocked the defender down to allow for the completion of the scoring play.

Woods-Anderson completed 7-of-15 for 113 yards passing and he also ran for 37 yards for the Cougars, as Dickens had two catches for 60 yards and Johnson finished with three receptions for 42 yards. Johnson led the Steele Canyon running game with 57 yards on six carries. Dickens also had 105 total yards in three kickoff returns.

RYAN LARCEVAL registered 12 tackles for the Cougars, while teammates WILLIE FAIR and SEAN McCARTHY both finished with 11 total stops. However, Steele Canyon (2-6, 0-3 GHL) failed to close out both halves, allowing Granite Hills (4-4, 1-2 GHL) to snap a 3-game losing streak.

“Our defense came up big when they had to,” said Granite Hills coach KELLAN COBBS, who posted their second-best defensive effort of the season.

On the offensive side, Meredith finished 16 of 31 for 182 passing yards for the Eagles, while Longbrake had 5 catches for 68 yards.

LA MESA (10-26-13) —This was a week of disasters for most of the teams, as five of the East County teams on Friday (Oct. 25) night won by a composite 271-21 score.

Helix sophomore quarterback MICHAEL AUSTIN served up 4 touchdown passes, helping Helix (6-2, 3-0 GHL) take a 44-0 halftime lead over the visiting Wolf Pack (6-2, 2-1 GHL).

The second half was played with a running clock as West Hills would score the only touchdown, ending the game 44-7.

“We have respect for every team we play, but we’re not looking ahead to Grossmont,” Austin said. “We always respect our opponent and anticipate whatever they give us.”

Helix coach TROY STARR would not admit that pounding the Pack was not high on his agenda.

Of course Helix has never lost to West Hills in 15 meetings.

“You know, we respect them because they play hard,” Starr said. “Their kids work really hard but we have better skill players.”

Austin completed 10 of 17 passes for 169 yards and 4 touchdowns.

JALEN DAVIS and AARON HARDIN reeled in 2 touchdowns apiece as the Highlanders completed their rout.

Helix defensive lineman XAVIER TUITELE scooped up a fumble and rumbled 15 yards to the end zone in the second quarter.

Slotback PEANUT HERRADA caught a 14-yard pass in the fourth quarter from West Hills quarterback STEPHEN SCHINDLER for the Wolf Packs’ only score.

GROSSMONT 69, VALHALLA 14 – There was no joy in Mudville (aka Valhalla Stadium) Friday night (Oct. 25) after Grossmont walloped the Norsemen in a Grossmont Hills League game.

Last year, Valhalla’s RAMSEY ROMANO captured a shootout with Grossmont’s quarterback ANTHONY LAWRENCE, with the Norsemen knocking off the previously unbeaten Foothillers 39-28.

This year was a different story: Lawrence was 24 of 33 for 418 yards and 6 touchdown passes – in the first half.

And he later ran for a 7th as the Foothillers prepare for next week’s Grossmont Hills League battle with Helix for The Musket and the league championship.

“We wanted to get revenge for last year,” Lawrence said.

The 69 points represents a Grossmont High record and the third highest in Grossmont Conference history.

Grossmont scored 10 touchdowns and never had to punt in Friday’s knockout.

“Fact is, we’ve only had to punt 8 times in 8 games this season,” noted Foothillers coach TOM KARLO.

After EAN HENDRICKSON boomed the opening kickoff into the end zone, Grossmont started its first of many marches down the field, finishing up with a 9- yard TD pass to junior wide receiver A.J. SHAW. J.T. BARNES split the uprights with the PAT and Grossmont led 7-0 at the 9:44 mark of the first quarter.

One minute later, the Hiller defense recovered a Valhalla fumble on the Norsemen 27-yard line — but Valhalla’s sophomore linebacker LOGAN BAKER pounced on a Grossmont fumble, recovering it at the Valhalla 21-yard line, thwarting a quick score by the Foothillers, but that reprieve was only temporary.

On its next possession, Grossmont scored in 6 plays when Lawrence ran it in from 2 yards out, extending the lead to 14-0, with 4:09 remaining in the initial period.

Late in the first quarter, junior linebacker JACOB DENSON picked off an errant Norsemen pass at the Valhalla 43-yard line, giving the Foothillers another chance to score again — when Lawrence hooked up with senior wide receiver CHRISTIAN BROOKS for a 30-yard TD pass-catch, making it 21-0 with 0:50 left.

“We scored on a blitz-check to Brooks that broke a scoreless tie,” Lawrence said, who finished with the 5th-most passing yards in a game in San Diego Section history.

“We look at each task at hand, not who we’re playing the next week,” added Brooks, who caught two touchdown passes from Lawrence, breaking the career touchdown receiving record of 18 held by teammate J.T. Barnes.

Three plays into the 2nd quarter, Valhalla senior defensive back CHRIS RAMSEY recovered a Hiller fumble at the Grossmont 25-yard line. Norseman sophomore quarterback PHILLIP NASSEH took advantage of the turnover and connected with senior wide receiver JOHN TODD for a 24-yard touchdown. Hendrickson added the PAT and Valhalla appeared to be creeping back into the game, 21-7, just 90 seconds into the second quarter.

It took one more play for the creep to stop. Lawrence tossed a screen pass to sophomore running back JAKE HARR who scampered 80 yards untouched to pay dirt; Barnes’ kick gave the Hillers back a comfortable lead of 28-7, with 10:26 remaining before halftime.

Less than a minute later, Lawrence and Shaw teamed up for a 10-yard TD pass-catch after senior defensive back PERRY SHERROD picked off a tipped Valhalla pass – for his 3rd interception to date – and the Foothillers led 35-7.

But the Norsemen weren’t ready to throw in the towel. Following the Hillers kickoff, Nasseh threw a bomb downfield to Todd, who, after making a spectacular catch 30 yards downfield, imitated a pinball, bouncing off several defenders to make it a 58-yard gain to the Grossmont 22-yard line. FABIAN YAKOU then burst through the middle of the line for a 15-yard gain to the Hiller 7-yard line.

On the next play Norseman junior quarterback VINCENT MANUPELLA lofted a perfect fade pass to Todd in the corner of the end zone, closing the gap a tad to 35-14, but unfortunately for Valhalla, there was still 9:15 to play before intermission — and the Hillers made the most of it, scoring two more TDs, both on Lawrence-to-Brooks passes, giving Grossmont an insurmountable 48-14 halftime lead. Altogether, there were 6 TDs scored in the second quarter alone.

The second half was more of the same, with the the Foothillers scoring three more touchdowns, by ALIJAH AVANT, RICKEY VALDEZ and junior quarterback CALVIN FARRIS, who popped a 75-yard TD run to end the bloodbath.

Lawrence amassed 487 yards on 27-37 passing, with 6 touchdowns.

For Valhalla, Nasseh was 14-24-2 for 239 yards and 1 TD, and Todd had 7 receptions for 151 yards and two TDs.

EL CAPITAN 42, SANTANA 0 – El Capitan grabbed a lead in the first quarter of Friday night’s (Oct. 25) Grossmont Valley League game and rode that momentum to a win over neighboring rival Santana and claimed rights to mythical Golden Whip trophy.

The Vaqueros scored in the first quarter on a passing touchdown, as junior quarterback BRAD CAGLE threw to junior slot ISAIAH CAPOOCIA for a 17-yard connection.

Capoocia flared out to the right flat, and Cagle hit his man at the 15. The back turned to move up field and slipped between two defenders, who ended up colliding with each other inside the 10. From there, he quickly moved into the end zone, as DILLON RETTIG added one more block in front of the goal line.

El Cap was up 28-0 at the half, as Vaqueros junior defensive back ZACH CAGLE returned a fumble for a touchdown in the second quarter. Later in the period, Cagle connected with senior wide receiver SCOTT ROOT for an 88-yard touchdown, while senior CHRIS PEARSON added a 4-yard score.

On the long play to Root, Brad Cagle rolled to his left all the way to the 10-yard marker and threw a high-lofting pass to the 6-foot-1 receiver. He came down with it wide open at his own 43 and took off down the left sideline untouched.

El Capitan expanded its lead to 42 points entering the fourth quarter. The Vaqueros scored two times in the third, including once on a passing touchdown from Cagle to Capoocia for a 52-yard gain, then junior SAM MELERO returned an interception for a 21-yard touchdown.

On the long score by Capoocia, Brad Cagle faked a handoff, then rolled to his right, hitting the wide-open slotman. He hauled the ball and ran to the right, before cutting back against the grain at the 20 and easily sailed in for the score.

It was another big evening for El Capitan ’s "Big Hogs" up front, as seniors ROBERT DELOZIER, PERRY WINKLER, DILLON KELLY and JOSH BROOKS, along with junior ANTHONY RICO controlled the line of scrimmage.

Melero's pick-six capped the defensive shutout, as Santana was attempting a screen pass from deep in their own territory when Melero jumped in front of the would-be receiver, knocking him down in the process while picking off the floater. He went the short distance untouched for the touchdown.

The Vaqueros had a strong rush on the night, led by senior linebacker DANIEL GOULET and junior linebackers JOEY LACHAPPA and JOHN LACHAPPA. Senior defensive back WYATT ALVAREZ also had a strong hand in pitching the shutout.

Brad Cagle completed 6 of 9 passes for 201 yards and 3 touchdowns. Root caught 3 passes for 109 and one score, while Capoocia caught 3 for 92 yards and 2 touchdowns.

El Capitan had been allowing an average of 17.3 points prior to the contest. The loss for Santana comes after they defeated El Cajon Valley 35-0 last week. The Vaqueros were coming off a 42-21 defeat at the hands of Mount Miguel in its previous game

El Capitan (7-1) goes up against Monte Vista in a Grossmont Valley League matchup next week, while Santana (1-7) has a meeting with Mount Miguel, also in a Grossmont Valley League game.

MOUNT MIGUEL 62, EL CAJON VALLEY 0 – Mount Miguel defensive back DEVAUGHN MURRAY set a Matadors school record when he picked off his 6th pass of the season for a touchdown in Friday’s (Oct. 25) conquest of Grossmont Valley League opponent El Cajon Valley.

Murray broke an interception record held by ROBERT GRIFFITH, who played for 13 years in the NFL, splitting time among the Minnesota Vikings, the Cleveland Browns and the Arizona Cardinals.

Murray also returned a kickoff 92 yards for a touchdown.

On BEN LOMIBAO’s 29-yard first-quarter touchdown run for the Matadors, the senior back took a pistol handoff and rushed straight up the middle behind huge clearing blocks by KURESSA LAULU, MIRACLE TAUSAGA, ALEXIS RAMIREZ and DAVID DILLARD, then slashed to the left side to outrun two defenders to the goal line for the score.

Later, Lomibao was tabbed for a goal-line dive play, but the handoff was botched. Senior quarterback BRAD MORENO picked up the miscue off the turf at the 5, and took off looking for somewhere to go. The Braves were deep into the backfield by that time and Moreno faked a pass just as JAYVON JONES cleared out a chasing defender. That allowed Moreno to race around a tackler and into the right corner of the end zone.

Moreno threw a touchdown pass to senior JOVON RICHARDSON when he dropped back in the pistol and lofted a high jump-ball pass to the back left corner of the end zone. El Cajon Valley 's DAMAJE HODGES was in good position and jumped to defend the 50/50 ball, but the 6-foot-2 receiver allowed it to just float down into his arms for the score.

On Moreno 's 23-yard touchdown pass to senior RASHAD HARPER, the quarterback took a deep drop and hit his receiver behind the coverage right at the goal line in the middle of the field.

Murray turned in a highlight-reel kickoff return for the Matadors to start the third quarter. He fielded the ball at the 8-yard line and faked running to the middle, only to cut back to the left sideline. He easily ran pass four Braves and started to cut back to the right side of the field after passing the 50, but ran into some resistance by the kicker, MARTIN PATTI, all the way down at the Braves' 20. He dropped a stop-step, then took off again for the end zone for the touch.

FEARLESS FORECASTER – Predictions

0-for-history Wolf Pack given no chance vs. Helix

By Bill Dickens
© East County Sports.com

LA MESA (10-24-13) — In 14 meetings, the West Hills Wolf Pack has never beaten Helix, which kinda puts a crink in Friday’s (Oct. 25) duel with the Highlanders at Jim Arnaiz Field.

Fearless Forecaster
Last Week: 4-2 (.667)
Season: 51-20 (.718)

This contest includes two of the three teams, including Grossmont, tied for first place in the Grossmont Hills League at 2-0.

Chances of an upset for West Hills (6-1 overall) are under the longshot category. That’s because this is a team that does not have long game threats.

West Hills’ upset hopes bank on quarterback STEPHEN SCHINDLER (66 of 122 passes for 898 yards, 10 TDs.

The Pack’s running game probably won’t be able to keep up, which will hurt against a defensive-minded Helix team that doesn’t give up much.

The Highlanders will look to running back ADRIAN PETTY (67-433, 5 TDs) to lead the way for Helix.

West Hills’ workhorses are running backs JACOB SHAW (90-358, 3 TDs) and NOAH YLAGAN (86-328, 3 TDs).

Even though the Pack is bidding for a league championship, the nod goes to... Helix 21-13.

GROSSMONT at VALHALLA, 7 – When these two teams met a year ago both units generated 492 yards total offense.

A similar slugfest is in the offing this time around, although the Foothillers, who are tied for first place with Helix and West Hills at 2-0 GHL are also on the shelf.

The Grossmont Hills League title probably won’t be decided until the final game of the season on Nov. 8.

Grossmont’s hopes circle around quarterback ANTHONY LAWRENCE (15-71, 25 TDs passing, and 311 rushing yards, 6 TDs).

The aerial game for the Foothillers is centered on CHRISTIAN BROOKS (45-535, 7 TDs), and career-record breaker J.T. BARNES (28 receptions for 123 yards, 8 TDs).

Valhalla has won 4 of the last 5 meetings with the Foothillers, but that will change this year... Grossmont 32-22.

EL CAJON VALLEY at MOUNT MIGUEL, 7 – Preseason favorite Mount Miguel is in the driver’s seat as far as capturing a fourth-straight Grossmont League Valley championship after knocking off co-favorite El Capitan in the opening round of league play.

The Matadors close the regular season with games against El Cajon Valley, Santana and Monte Vista.

History will say that the Matadors should win on a roll, in that they have won 27 of the last 29 meetings with El Cajon Valley.

Considering the Braves lost their last game to GVL rival Monte Vista 46-0 indicates the Braves have no chance of springing an upset.

Injuries have plagued an already thin Braves’ roster.

On the flip side Mount Miguel looks to quarterback BRAD MORENO (1114 passing, 4 TDs). He’s also rushed for 4 more scores.

RASHAD HARPER (25 catches, 501 yards, 2 TDs) and JOVON RICHARDSON (24 catches, 333 yards, 1 TD) provide capable targets for Moreno.

The unsung hero for the Matadors, injured BEN LOMIBAO (134 carries, 876 yards, 14 TDs) and TRE BRYERS (60-132, 2 TDs) lead a powerful Mount Miguel running game.

DAVAUGHN MURRAY and MIRACLE TAUSAGE anchor an aggressive Mount Miguel defense... Mount Miguel 33-0.

STEELE CANYON at GRANITE HILLS, 7 – Both of these teams are fighting for a playoff position but history favors Steele Canyon, which has won 9 of 10 meetings between the two schools.

The idea of winning a Grossmont Hills League championship is gone for both teams, which are yet to win a game in circuit play. But that will not dilute the intensity of what goes on on the field.

Running back JESSE BISBAL (89-678, 8 TDs) carries the ground game for the Eagles (3-4, 0-2 GHL), while quarterback CHRIS MEREDITH (57-99, 895, 7 TDs) directs the aerial game for Granite Hills.

Versatile JORDAN JOHNSON can play quarterback and makes a fine receiver as well for the Cougars, who seem to have been in a rebuilding mode all season.

The man who delivers speed for Steele Canyon is LAWRENCE DICKENS as a running back and a wide receiver, and should be difficult to cover for the Eagles.

This one’s a strange game to pick, but the nod goes to... Steele Canyon 21-16.

SANTANA at EL CAPITAN, 7 – After having a week off and watching Santana celebrate its first win, the Vaqueros should come out with all their guns a-blazin’ in Friday’s (Oct. 25) Grossmont Valley League contest.

East County passing leader BRAD CAGLE directs the Vaqueros’ offense, which is averaging 47.6 points per game. Cagle is a double threat in that he’s rushed for 7 touchdowns and passed for 1713 yards and 17 touchdowns.

Cagle has a stable full of receivers led by ISAIAH CAPOOCIA (27 for 399, 7 TDs), SCOTT ROOT (26-806, 10 TDs) and CHRIS PEARSON (20-417, 3 TDs).

The Vaqueros’ running game is anchored by D.J. SMITH (78-802, 16 TDs).

That’s way too much firepower for a Santana team that is averaging only 10 ppg.

The Vaqueros were favored to win the Grossmont Valley League championship, but now need a 3-game sweep to close the season to stand any chance of wearing the crown.

History favors El Capitan, which has won seven of the last eight meetings over Santana for The Golden Whip... El Capitan 42-7.

FOOTHILLS CHRISTIAN vs. CLASSICAL ACADEMY at Orange Glen, 7 – Nobody is quite sure what happened to Foothills Christian, which takes on Classical Academy Friday night (Oct. 25) in a Citrus League game in North County.

In the last four losses for the Knights (1-5, 0-2 CL), Foothills Christian has been completely off-key and doesn’t figure to tune up against Classical Academy.

In the recent losing skid Foothills Christian has been outscored 193-19. Any chance the Knights have of springing an upset victory over Classical Academy (5-2, 1-1 CL) hinges around quarterback CALEB HOFFMAN.

That’s a tall order, considering that the Knights have sputtered in all offensive categories except those that involve Hoffman... Classical Academy 38-8.

Saturday, Oct. 26
CLAIREMONT vs. CHRISTIAN
at Granite Hills, 7 – This is a duel for first place in the Central League between these two teams on Saturday (Oct. 26) at Granite Hills High.

Probably the biggest measuring stick between the two teams is when they played Mission Bay. In non-league matchups Christian fell to the Buccaneers 24-21, but Mission Bay clobbered Clairemont 41-0.

The Patriots (6-1, 1-0 CL) will look to quarterback MICHAEL CARRILLO (83 of 128 passes for 1490 yards and 17 TDs), who will direct Christian’s offense against the Chieftains (3-4, 1-0 CL).

Christian has a handful of receivers, including ARVAN KAI (23 catches, 495, 4 TDs).

On the defensive side, Christian looks to linebackers TRENT SAULS and SEBASTIAN SWIFT.

The Patriots have rarely sputtered and certainly won't this time... Christian 28-16.
